Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Last of Us Part II!
Summary
- Tommy should act as Joel's replacement to further develop his character in The Last of Us season 2.
- Yara's loss of faith in the Seraphites is a storyline that needs to be explored more in the episodes.
- Lev's gender identity arc should be given more focus to continue the LGBTQ+ representation in The Last of Us season 2.
The Last of Us season 2 will be adapting The Last of Us Part II, and these 10 video game characters definitely deserve more screen time in HBO's batch of episodes. The Last of Us season 2 will undoubtedly continue the stories of many key characters from The Last of Us season 1, with the video game sequel bringing Ellie and Joel into an all-new storyline. However, The Last of Us Part II severely underutilized some of its original characters as well as some characters from the first game, and The Last of Us. season 2 should fix that.
The Last of Us season 2 is currently in development, with HBO set to release the highly-anticipated continuation of the critically acclaimed adaptation of the video game franchise of the same name. The Last of Us Part II takes place several years after the first game, with it following Ellie and she journeys to Seattle on a quest to find and kill Abby and the others that killed Joel. Ellie and Abby are fully fleshed-out characters in The Last of Us Part II, but some of their ing characters aren't, including these 10.
10 Tommy Can Act As Season 2's Joel Replacement
Played By Gabriel Luna
One of the most obvious characters to expand on in The Last of Us season 2 is Joel's brother, Tommy Miller. In the video game sequel, Tommy heads off to Seattle to kill Abby as well, with Ellie and Tommy meeting up later in the game. Tommy can act as Joel's The Last of Us replacement, with him being the father figure in Ellie's life. However, the details that the game provides regarding Tommy's journey to Seattle are surprisingly slim, meaning that the HBO show can flesh this storyline out.

10 The Last Of Us 2 Storylines That The Show Should Expand On In Season 2
The Last of Us season 2 should continue one of season 1's best tricks: expanding on storylines. Luckily, these 10 would be perfect candidates.
9 Yara's Loss Of Faith In The Seraphites Should Be A Big Deal
Not Cast Yet
The Seraphites play a big role in The Last of Us Part II, with the group being a religious cult that Abby and Ellie have to deal with on their respective journeys. Yara is a young Seraphite warrior who ends up leaving the Seraphites alongside her brother, with Abby helping the duo survive. Although Lev is the reason that Yara leaves, it obviously took a lot for Yara to break out of the Seraphite cult's ideology. The Last of Us season 2 should delve into Yara's spiritual deconstruction, giving this arc an even deeper meaning.
8 Lev's Gender Identity Can Be A Big Part Of Season 2
Not Cast Yet
Lev is Yara's younger brother, with him getting hunted down by the Seraphites after shaving his head in an attempt to affirm his gender identity. This storyline is told in The Last of Us Part II, but it isn't as blatant as it should have been. The Last of Us' Ellie is a gay protagonist, and the series has already doubled down on LGBTQ+ representation in a variety of other ways. Further exploring Lev's gender identity arc would be a great way to continue doing this, meaning that season 2 should expand on this aspect of the character.
7 Dina Should Take A More Active Role In Ellie's Story
Played By Isabela Merced
Dina is Ellie's girlfriend in The Last of Us Part II, with her journeying to Seattle alongside Ellie in the same way that Ellie journeyed alongside Joel in the original game. However, Dina is a fairly ive character, with her mostly following Ellie around and being someone that Ellie can save throughout the game. Although Dina's pregnancy does make her a bit of a liability in the zombie-infested wasteland, Dina should definitely play a more active role in Ellie's story, with The Last of Us season 2 making her an even stronger character.
6 Seth Can Show The Dark Side Of Jackson
Not Cast Yet
Seth is an incredibly minor character in The Last of Us Part II, but he is an interesting one, meaning that he should play a bigger role in season 2. Seth is a bartender in Jackson, with him making a homophobic remark to Ellie early in the game, only for Joel to take matters into his own hands. Having Seth act as a bigger antagonistic force could be an interesting way to further explore the dark side of Jackson, giving Ellie an even greater reason to leave the city and head to Seattle.
5 Maria Should Continue Her HBO Season 1 Expansion
Played By Rutina Wesley
Maria is an interesting character in The Last of Us season 1, as the HBO show built upon her story from the video games, although not by much. Fans of the show were quite fond of Maria in season 1, with it even being speculated that she could be Joel's The Last of Us season 2 replacement. Maria appears again in The Last of Us Part II due to its Jackson setting, and season 2 should make sure to continue her expansion from season 1.
4 The Seraphite Prophet Needs More Lore
Not Cast Yet
Very little is known about the Seraphite Prophet in The Last of Us Part II, and The Last of Us season 2 should add more lore to the character. The Seraphite Prophet is the individual who started the Seraphite cult, with the Seraphite enemies throughout the game praising her. An entire episode dedicated to her time starting the Seraphites could be incredible, finally fleshing out this unseen figure as a fully-fledged character.

The Last Of Us Season 2: Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will return for a second season of HBO's The Last of Us, which adapts the successful video game franchise.
3 Owen's Relationship With Abby Can Be Explored More
Not Cast Yet
In The Last of Us Part II, Owen is Abby's ex-boyfriend, with their relationship being complicated throughout the game. Sadly, Owen seems pretty flat compared to some of the other WLF characters, something that the HBO show needs to be addressed. Having an even stronger relationship between Owen and Abby could go a long way in making Abby even more sympathetic, addressing The Last of Us season 2's Abby problems.
2 Mel's Post-Apocalyptic Pregnancy Should Be Highlighted
Not Cast Yet
If Owen's story is expanded in The Last of Us season 2, then Mel's probably will be too. Mel and Owen got together after Abby and Owen broke up before the events of The Last of Us Part II, with Mel eventually getting pregnant. Further exploring Mel would make her an even stronger counterpart to Dina, with this creating an even stronger thematic link between Ellie and Abby.
1 Boris' Story Shouldn't Be Off-Screen Again
Not Cast Yet
The final character who should be expanded on in The Last of Us Part II is a character whose story was told entirely off-screen in the game: Boris. In the game, Boris was a former WLF member who went rogue after his daughter was killed by the group. Armed with a bow, Boris hunted down WLF and wiped them out in revenge. This story is only told through collectibles in The Last of Us Part II, but this story is perfect for The Last of Us season 2, possibly even in a standalone episode.
