The Last Of Us Part 2's release date and announced several different special editions of the game.
Even in 2018, The Last of Us Part 2 was one of the most anticipated and E3 2018 gameplay was totally real. Apparently, visuals that impressive could end up taking up quite the amount of space.
Twitter Wario64, who often tweets about video game deals and announcements, noticed a Best Buy listing for The Last of Us Part 2's special edition said the full game would be two discs. Wario64 posted a screenshot of the description, which reads "Includes Full game (2-Discs)," to Twitter. The Best Buy description currently makes no mention of multiple discs, however, so The Last of Us Part 2's two-disc format is not officially confirmed.
If The Last of Us Part 2 does end up shipping on two discs, it wouldn't be the first AAA game to do so in the last few years. When it released just last October, physical versions of Red Dead Redemption 2 came with two discs - the main, basic game disc and a second "boot disc" used to install other necessary data. It's not clear if a two-disc The Last of Us Part 2 would follow Red Dead's boot disc format or ask players to "Insert Disc 2" at a certain point in the game, as some larger titles in the era of the original PlayStation did. Either way, there aren't many other examples of multi-disc PS4 games outside of multi-game packs like the BioShock Collection. Dual-layered Blu-ray discs can hold up to 50 GB of data, so a game has to be considerably large if it takes up more than one. Physical PS4 copies of Read Dead Redemption 2 require 99 GB of installation space, with digital s requiring even more GB.
With The Last of Us Part 2 near the end of development and an early 2020 release date confirmed, it's only a matter of time before the game's number of discs is confirmed. If the Best Buy description was indeed changed, it's not clear why Sony would alter it to remove the mention of two discs. Perhaps the company worries that The Last of Us Part 2's storage requirements could cause problems for PS4 s without much free space.
