The Knuckles trailer briefly shows Knuckles' fists on fire in a scene that sees him taking on a new and powerful foe in the middle of a city street. While the video games have shown Knuckles using fire powers for years now, it is a brand-new revelation regarding his live-action appearances. Knuckles has fire powers in the Sonic video games, and he's had them for over two decades at this point. Knuckles first displays his fire abilities in the 2001 video game, Sonic Adventure 2, and it is best demonstrated when Knuckles delivers an uppercut.

While the trailer's depiction of Knuckles' fire powers is something that the echidna seemingly can summon at will, Sonic Adventure 2 makes it a point to only show Knuckles' fists on fire when he delivers combos. As the game shows, Knuckles' incredible speed and friction against his gloves essentially allows him to boost the power of his combos by igniting his fists mid-combination. As seen in subsequent games like Sonic Heroes and Sonic Frontiers, Knuckles's command of his abilities strengthens significantly, which allows his body to be engulfed by flames while in motion with no injury to himself.

Knuckles' incredible destructive power via his fire powers already make him a greater threat to Dr. Robotnik and Shadow the Hedgehog in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3. While Knuckles displayed an incredibly high level of hand-to-hand combat prowess in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Knuckles giving the echidna fire powers means that Team Sonic will have a less difficult time defending Green Hill Zone from any invading threats. Combined with his incredible senses and ability of flight, Knuckles is already showing audiences that Knuckles will be a formidable ally in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
