A new official short film for Killer Klowns From Outer Space has been released. Initially seen as just a goofy movie about alien clowns, Killer Klowns From Outer Space is now considered a cult classic. A sequel to Charles, Stephen, and Edward Chiodo’s horror movie has been stuck in development hell for years, with plans for The Return of the Killer Klowns From Outer Space in 3D first surfacing in 2012.

Even though a sequel never happened, the Chiodo Brothers have previously revealed they have plenty of ideas on how to continue Killer Klowns From Outer Space’s story. Last year Stephen Chiodo gave a few details on his planned trilogy, saying a sequel was being discussed for Syfy but ultimately didn’t happen due to budget restraints. Apparently, Syfy would only allocate $2 million for a sequel, which is how much the movie was made for in the ‘80s. Chiodo still remains hopeful, though, wanting the series to continue as a TV show following the original characters after the first invasion.

Now, a new official short film has been released by Halloween Horror Nights to promote Universal Studios’ annual event. The video shows a group of friends encountering Shorty at a gas station, who uses his cotton candy gun to shrink their car. The full short film can be seen below:

Interest in Killer Klowns From Outer Space has grown in recent years, partly due to Spirit Halloween featuring merchandise for the movie. Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights is also bringing more attention to the film, which could bode well for the franchise's future. It was previously said that Killer Klowns From Outer Space 2 was scrapped when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, but Edward Chiodo claims that was falsely reported. According to him, the sequel was not part of the acquisition, and that the rights sit with MGM (now owned by Amazon). If Amazon thinks enough people are interested in Killer Klowns From Outer Space, it’s possible the franchise could continue on Prime Video.

But for now, this short film is the closest audiences will get to a sequel. At around two minutes, it doesn’t expand the franchise much, but it is nice to see Shorty return in an official capacity. Shorty looks significantly older with more wrinkles around his face, yet this could have been completely unintentional. It could be some time before things actually move forward on a sequel to Killer Klowns From Outer Space, but at least fans of the series can get their fill of the characters this year at Universal Studios.
