Warning: contains spoilers for Scarlet Witch #2The lore of Marvel's vast cosmos - spread across the neverending Multiverse - seems to constantly be changed, retconned, and redefined, and that includes the existence of powerful "Nexus Beings." A preview for Scarlet Witch #2 once again confirms that Wanda Maximoff is the Nexus Being of Earth-616, before expanding on the Scarlet Witch's status as a Nexi, and the incredible power potential she and her brother Quicksilver possess as the Ultimate Nexus.

After the Wizard's assault on Wanda and Pietro in Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver, the debut of the new Scarlet Witch solo series saw the wildly powerful Griever At The End Of All Things attack Lotkill, before seemingly killing the Scarlet Witch.

The preview for Scarlet Witch #2, from writer Steve Orlando with art from Jacopo Camagni and Frank William, sees Wanda Maximoff waking up in the Land of the Dead - specifically the Witches Underworld - saved by the Queen of Nevers, sister to the vicious Griever.

Scarlet Witch Is The Nexus Being Of Earth-616

Wanda has the potential to become the Ultimate Nexus

Scarlet Witch Nexus Beings

The Scarlet Witch's status as a Nexus Being - or a being that exists outside of space and time and can impact the "grand design" of the Multiverse - has been a part of her history since the 1990s. Revealed in Scarlet Witch (1994) #2, Wanda discovers that she is a Nexus Being when a Multiversal variant of herself, Lore, begins to attack Earth-616. Since then, Wanda's status as a Nexus Being has played a role in several plots, mainly Immortus' manipulations of the Scarlet Witch in Avengers West Coast (1990), an attempt to imbue Wanda with multiple Nexus energies at the behest of the cosmic Time-Keepers.

Scarlet Witch's Evil Multiversal Twin LORE Returns After 30 Years

Scarlet Witch (2024) #2 shows the Queen of Nevers - who happens to be the "girlfriend" of the cosmic entity known as Eternity - explaining to Wanda why the Griever hates her so much. While the Queen of Nevers is all about freedom and the beauty of chaos, the true freedom that the Scarlet Witch holds as a being ungoverned by the cosmic order of predestination, the Griever is obsessed with control and destiny. Just like how the Griever appeared in Fantastic Four (2018) to destroy the new Universes that Franklin Richards created in the aftermath of Secret Wars, she has now decided that Wanda's status as a Nexus Being has become untenable.

Jean Grey, Kang, And Odin Are All Multiversal Nexi

These iconic variants were introduced in What If...?

What If #38 Odin Nexus Being

The preview for Scarlet Witch #2 depicts the Queen of Nevers highlighting other Nexus Beings from across the Multiverse, including Odin of Earth-9260, the vampiric Jean Grey from Earth-9250, and Kang the Conqueror who comes from Earth-6311. Most of these Multiversal Nexi were introduced beginning in What If...? (1992) #35, in which the idea of an "Ultimate Nexus" was first mentioned by the Watcher. Wanda was able to shake off Immortus' control, stopping herself from becoming the Ultimate Nexus with the power to manipulate the realities of all known universes... but now the Queen of Nevers has offered her the opportunity once again, of her own free will.

The Scarlet Witch will soon be forced to face her evil Multiversal variant Lore, another Nexus Being, and she might only be able to defeat the villain by becoming the Ultimate Nexus. Wanda Maximoff will need to return to Earth-616, reunite with her brother Pietro, and battle against the Griever if she has any hope of saving her world.

Scarlet Witch #2 from Marvel Comics debuts on July 17th, 2024.
