Warning: spoilers ahead for Kang the Conqueror #4!

In Marvel Comics' name of "Kang" itself.

In previous issues of Kang the Conqueror, Nathaniel has been living through the history of his future self, battling older versions such as the original Kang and Rama-Tut, the name Kang took when he became an Egyptian Pharaoh. He's also encountered the love his older self lost: Ravonna Renslayer. While Kang thought he could become a hero rather than a conqueror to save her life, he loses her all same in the new Kang the Conqueror #4 (from Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Carlos Magno, Espen Grundetjern, Joe Caramagna) with Marvel's reveal that Nathaniel has been the original Kang all along, his origins a paradox where he always becomes the traditional Kang (despite knowing what his future holds.)

However, during his time as Rama-Tut before beginning his true conquest, Nathaniel discovers a neurokinetic armory, recognizing it as the very machine his older self used to forge his armor and time ship. As he constructs the powerful tools which will help him in his mission to conquer the timeline, the clanging of the forge makes an audible and foreboding "Kang" sound, which rises into the villain's forces shouting his name in unison.

Kang name origin

Despite this moment having already happened for countless past Kangs in this paradox of origins, it's still a pivotal moment for this current Kang. By building his ship, he feels as though he finally has the agency to conquer time itself, and it makes sense that he would take the name "Kang", claiming it as his own for the first time. However, time is still the ultimate conqueror over Nathaniel, especially after he realizes that he's never actually deviated from becoming just like the Kang who recruited him. Fans will be split over whether this is a silly or fitting origin for Kang's name, but it does tie into the moment he accepted his true nature, and it reflects the way in which he conquers time by building a vast, era-spanning machine of loyal followers and technological control.

In any case, it's exciting to learn the apparent origin of the Kang name along with the secrets of his incredibly complex origins in the Marvel Universe. Kang now possesses Ravonna's body, believing that he can still be more than the Kangs of the past in his goal to break time itself to restore his lost love. Sadly, it's clear that Nathaniel is still on the endless, circular track of Kang the Conqueror, making it oddly fitting that he learned his future name long before he encountered the circumstances that actually inspired it.
