DC's mightiest heroes, the DC's ever-expanding universe. DC Comics just announced Justice League: Last Ride, a new digital-first limited series from award-winning writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Miguel Mendonça with colors by Enrica Eren Angiolini. The first issue will be available on digital platforms on April 14.
The announcement comes as DC begins expanding its digital-first library. Having just launched DC Universe Infinite last month, it would seem that the publisher sees a lot of untapped potential in the digital market. New series like DC Universe Infinite's Let Them Live! are among the recent digital additions to DC's ongoing library. Let Them Live! sees DC creatively releasing new exclusively digital content as Yara Flor's Wonder Girl, welcomed into the main timeline.
Starting in April, Justice League: Last Ride will uncover the truth about the League's greatest failure and how they move past it to save the world one last time. DC Comics released details about the new book, which will see a fractured Justice League attempting to regroup. Fans will be given an insight into how Earth's mightiest heroes suffered a tragedy so terrible that it shattered their bonds, resulting in Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman leaving. Now, threatened by the greatest villains in the universe, the team must return to their past status as the greatest superhero team and do what they do best, save the cosmos. It seems that the Justice League's main roster will stay much the same unless DC has a few aces up its sleeve. However, with the universe-destroying threat at hand, the League may need to call backup. The series picks up after the events that forced the League to disband, which will be revealed in flashbacks and explanations as the newly reformed League reflects on what broke them. It's inferred that the unthinkable tragedy that they suffered has something to do with what DC is calling "the universe's greatest murder trial" and that maybe a past League member suffered a terrible fate.
It will be interesting to see if the consequences of Justice League: Last Ride will have any lasting effect on DC's main timeline, or will it be contained to its own continuity. Whether the Justice League fall or reign victorious, it seems evident that their heroics will be tested to their very limits. The limited series will be available as 16 weekly issues, followed by 8 monthly print issues. The first issue of the 16-part story debuts on digital platforms on April 14, with the monthly print issues beginning May 11 in comic book stores. If you want the answers to what DC has teased, make sure to check out the digital-first Justice League series when it's released.
