trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth has increased the audience's interest in seeing the film on the biggest screen possible, new developments may change how they view it upon its release.
Following a trilogy of commercially successful films with mixed critical responses, Rebirth's mutant raptors, the new movie promises to create an atmosphere of genuine terror that should be seen on the big screen.
Jurassic World Rebirth Tickets Are Now On Sale But No IMAX Screenings
The Next Big Dinosaur Film From Universal Can Be Seen In Other Formats
Along with the release of the second trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, presale tickets became available at domestic theaters for the film's opening, with showtimes beginning on July 2. However, eager audiences who went to score their tickets quickly noticed one strange omission from the film's release options. While theaters that had their own offerings, such as Prime and Dolby Cinema, were available, there were no IMAX screenings of the new film.
The IMAX CEO is rumored to have said that Jurassic World Rebirth will be released on IMAX screens in China, but no details outside that market have been provided.
With Rebirth seeming to fix issues from the franchise's past, this is a huge disappointment for many who prefer IMAX. While the critical response to the past few films has not been great, the appeal of seeing enormous dinosaurs on the biggest screens possible still persists. The new film seems to be fixing issues with dinosaur environments and other details that were seen as concerns with recent films. With a new cast, director, and outlook, this film might actually be something special, and it is disappointing that it will not grace IMAX screens.
Before Rebirth, The Initial Jurassic World Movie Trilogy Were All Released In IMAX
This Breaks A 10-Year Streak For The Franchise's IMAX Release
IMAX releases for the Jurassic World trilogy have been important for the franchise, and occurred for each film. Notably, per The Hollywood Reporter, the first Jurassic World film was actually given the biggest worldwide IMAX release ever at the time. While the film went on to break records, a small portion of the movie's gross was taken from IMAX screens, and this pattern continued throughout the sequels. Both Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World Dominion made a splash on IMAX screens, which highlighted their excellent visuals.
Notably, while films like Jurassic World Dominion were, Rebirth was not filmed for IMAX and would need to be converted, which may partially explain its release.
Among all the Jurassic Park movies, even the first film was given a 3D re-release in 2013 on IMAX screens. It is clear that a strong relationship between IMAX and Universal was forged over the franchise, and it is strange to see that none of these screens are available for the new film. Amidst a record-breaking summer at the box office, it still seems that Rebirth will make an enormous splash in the cinemas, which makes the ending of this 10-year streak between the Jurassic franchise and IMAX so puzzling.
F1 & Superman Are Likely Being Prioritized For IMAX Showtimes Instead
Summer 2025 Is Packed With Other Visually Heavy Films
The 2025 summer release schedule is tightly packed, and there are only so many IMAX screens to go around. F1, the new film from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, releases at the end of June, and will take up many of those screens. With the film promising to be a visual feast and having been shot for IMAX, it makes sense that the new movie, which has great box office prospects, would be able to hold onto those screens, as it seems that the format is more important to the movie.
In addition, Superman releases the week after Rebirth and was also filmed for the IMAX format. With anticipation high after details were revealed during a set visit to the 2025 James Gunn film, it makes sense that this film is also being prioritized for those screens. While neither Superman nor F1 are sure things, either one could wind up being the biggest movie of the summer. Having been filmed for the format, it remains to be seen by summer’s end, through the overall box office receipts, and prioritizing those films instead would be the right choice for IMAX.
How Will The Lack Of IMAX Screenings Impact Jurassic World Rebirth?
IMAX Has Been Important For The Jurassic Franchise's Past
Despite not being well-received critically, Jurassic World Dominion first built up anticipation for its release with an exclusive preview playing before the IMAX release of F9. Doing so built up interest in the film, and gave a look at the dinosaurs and environments as they would appear on an enormous screen. It seems that a promotion like that, which emphasized the spectacle of the film, worked, as Dominion went on to make over $1 billion at the global box office despite holding a 29% Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes.

This release is disappointing and may hamper the new film's chances of reaching the same heights as previous installments. IMAX showtimes are generally more expensive, and the format has grown more popular in recent years. With movie tickets going up along with the cost of living, many audiences have preferred to prioritize the best possible screenings for each film that they leave in the comfort of their home, ensuring that their dollars are well spent. However, IMAX screenings still only tend to for about 10% of a film's overall gross.
That amount, however, could make the difference between Rebirth becoming a billion-dollar movie or not. With the second-longest Jurassic franchise runtime limiting screenings and a clear downward trend in the box office over the previous films, the IMAX screens could have made a significant difference in the film's overall chances. With those having been removed, it is beginning to look less likely that Rebirth will make it to $1 billion. Still, its chances of recouping its reported $265 million budget, the most expensive in the franchise, are good.

Jurassic World Rebirth Is Practically Combining The Stories Of The Jurassic Park Trilogy, & That's Why It Could Be Great
Jurassic World Rebirth is practically combining the stories of the original Jurassic Park trilogy, and that's why it could end up being great.
If Jurassic World Rebirth is good, it is almost certain to make a big splash when it is released in July. However, the absence of IMAX screens for the movie's release is disappointing. With the promise of big dinosaur action and horror, the new movie looks to be a visual feast. Fortunately, projection in other formats remains a strong way to see the new film. Perhaps the franchise will be able to secure IMAX screens for a re-release sometime down the line.
