The connection between Disney's new Indiana Jones is more than just skin deep. Superficially, both adventures feature mythical artifacts, German antagonists, and enough brushes with death to put anyone off archaeology for life. However, a look below the surface suggests these similarities hint at a much more profound relationship. In fact, close inspection reveals that the two movies don't just have suspiciously similar plots but may actually be part of an interwoven story.

In the new movie, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt star as a pair of unlikely collaborators on the trail of a mythical tree, rumored to be capable of healing wounds, curing illnesses, and lifting curses. The film takes inspiration from the famous theme park attraction of the same name and had been in production hell since 2004. However, Jungle Cruise's eventual release not only ends uncertainty over the project but could possibly pave the way for a wider Disney cinematic universe.

While casual movie-goers can be forgiven for failing to recognize the association between Jungle Cruise and Indiana Jones, the real clues can be found in the lore behind the original park ride. Across Disney's extensive range of worldwide theme parks, reference is made to a mysterious organization known as the Society of Explorers and Adventurers – or, S.E.A. of the group can be found throughout Disney's parks, ranging from Barnabas T. Bullion of Big Thunder Mountain to Henry Mystic of Mystic Manor.

The connection between S.E.A and the Jungle Cruise ride stems from one man – Dr. Albert Falls. Dr. Falls, who is briefly referenced in the new movie, is best known as the fictional head of the Jungle Navigation Company that runs the cruise and even has his portrait hung at the ride entrance. While this helps to link Disney park lore around the world, it doesn't necessarily explain what Jungle Cruise has to do with Indiana Jones. However, a closer look at the studio's parks collection reveals a surprising connection.

According to information found at Disney Springs in Florida, another member of the S.E.A organization is none other than Dr. Jones' long-time collaborator Jock Lindsey. Lindsey, alongside his pet snake Reggie, is best known for flying Indy to safety during the opening sequence of the new Jungle Cruise movie and existing Indiana Jones franchise share the same universe.

As exciting as this prospect is, the connection between Indiana Jones and other Disney properties may run even deeper. According to Easter eggs dotted around Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar in Florida, previous guests at the watering hole include both Marion Ravenwood and Howard Stark. This throws up the tantalizing prospect of Indiana Jones teaming up with Iron Man's dad in a shocking twist to the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, in the meantime, the possible connection between Jungle Cruise and Indiana Jones is exciting enough on its own.
