July 2022 video game releases mostly follow the annual trends, with a heavier emphasis on indie games as AAA developers prepare to show their hand during conventions, but some standouts like Xenoblade Chronicles 3 keep things exciting for all audiences. The middle of the year is always a pivotal moment for the gaming industry, and in lieu of major conventions like E3, developers have taken to highlighting releases in other conferences. While some titles are still a development cycle or two away, there are a good volume of games right around the corner. From fast-paced roguelikes to somber cat adventure stories, July has options for everyone.
Last month saw a number of releases, though June initially put a sour taste in the mouths of many, as landmark developer Blizzard Entertainment released Diablo Immortal to controversy and the biggest launch in Diablo history. However, the games that followed were less polarizing. Escape from Tarkov finally found a direct competitor in the release of The Cycle: Frontier, an extraction looter-shooter that takes place on the alien planet Fortuna III. With new IPs to bring variety to standing genres, June resolved with new content for a difficult and taxing experience: the release of Cuphead's Delicious Last Course DLC.
One of the most-anticipated titles for July is likely Stray, a cat-platforming cyberpunk adventure game from the perspective of a feline protagonist. French developer BlueTwelve Studios seeks to immerse the player in its cyberpunk city, where the cat must traverse urban environments and solve puzzles to escape their dystopian quandary. The game emphasizes both the physical limits of the player-creature, and the utility that the city's robot denizens provide. Anticipation is high for an adventure game that provides perspective in a novel way, with a nuanced world to supplement, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 looks to end the month with a grand sci-fi world of its own as well, with preorders having already caused Nintendo's website for Xenoblade Chronicles 3's special edition to crash - twice.

Release dates are always subject to change, whether it leads to more or fewer games in a given month. The tentative list for July is promising; annual sports games and ports to other systems are par for the course, but there are a number of interesting new releases that look plenty unique all on their own. As always, players should keep an eye out for indie releases that silently appear on all platforms, but this should serve as a solid roap for July 2022's video game releases, Stray and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 aside.
