It's been a great time to be a fan of between Gojo and Sukuna in the manga, no small part must also be credited to the promotional video that dropped.
The video, which was posted to the official Jump Comics YouTube channel on July 5, 2023, is labeled as both a promotion for the publication of the manga's 23rd volume, which covers Chapters #200 to #208, and a commemoration of the Culling Game Arc, the last part of which is covered in the volume. The video, which is sure to make the Jujutsu Kaisen PR department's colleagues on the anime side jealous, delivers an awesomely crafted, scrumptiously mesmerizing visual introduction to the colonies in the Culling Game's area of operations.
Jujutsu Kaisen's Culling Game Arc is Breathtaking in New Animated Trailer
Viewers will first notice the outstanding imagery of Tokyo, Sendai, and Kagoshima - the three colonies where most of the story takes place. Next, there's the smooth animated overlay of key visual moments of the story as well as specific locations of actual battlegrounds in the arc. These elements along with the eerily mysterious music score create the perfect visualization of what the Culling Game might be like if it happened in real life. If the video doesn't inspire one to read the manga or watch the anime, at least it makes one want to check out Volume #23.
The Culling Game Is Complicated And Chaotic And Great Storytelling
It makes sense that Shonen Jump would want to pull out all the stops in promoting Volume 23. Not only does it include the culmination of one of the longest arcs in the series, but it also provides the necessary context and background for the current stroyline which is widely believed to be the Jujutsu Kaisen finale arc. Additionally, it has important links to Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto's early days as students, which makes it a perfect reading companion to the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen's anime. Perhaps most importantly though, depicts the development of several characters including Choso, Hana Kurusa/Angel, and even Noritoshi Kamo who should play a role in ultimately determining if Sukuna and Kenjaku are defeated.
Most interestingly, the volume finally brings Jujutsu Kaisen's Yuki Tsukomo out of the shadows. Yuki was briefly introduced during Gojo and Geto's student days. Like them, she was identified as a Special Grade Sorcerer, of impressive skill and experience. Volume 23 details her powers and significance, especially as a fill-in for Gojo, while he is stuck in the Prison Realm.
While the Culling Game Arc is easily one of the saga's best, it is also its most complicated by far. At times, creator Gege Akutami went off on a number of tangents that were, at least so far, unconnected with the main storyline. The chapters included in Volume 23 do their best to clear up some of those non-sequiturs. It also provides a crucial understanding of cursed techniques, including domain expansion, reverse cursed technique, and the relationship between positive energy and negative energy to a jujutsu sorcerer. Accordingly, Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 23 is truly an "envelope-stretching" volume worthy of a groundbreaking promotional video.
