Summary
- Donnie Yen's Caine is getting his own spinoff movie set after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4.
- The movie will film in Hong Kong in 2025, though no director has been announced.
- No story details have been revealed, but the spinoff has an opportunity to continue the story between Caine and Akira after the John Wick: Chapter 4 post-credits scene.
The world of John Wick: Chapter 4's ending seemingly brought Wick's story to a close, but several other characters introduced in that film, including Donnie Yen's Caine, got more open-ended conclusions.
THR now reports that Caine is getting his very own John Wick spinoff movie. The currently-untitled project is set to shoot in Hong Kong in 2025, with Yen reprising the role. No director for the movie has been announced just yet, but franchise director Chad Stahelski is developing the spinoff as part of his larger deal with Lionsgate to expand the John Wick universe. The script is being written by Robert Askins.
John Wick 4 Sets Up The Perfect Caine Spinoff Movie Plot
Another Chapter 4 Character Could Return In The New Spinoff
Wick himself got an ambiguous ending in the most recent sequel, but the John Wick: Chapter 4 post-credits scene gives Caine one too. After Caine kills Hiroyuki Sanada's Shimazu earlier in the film, the post-credits scene features Akira (Rina Sawayama), Shimazu's daughter, moments away from exacting her revenge. The scene ends, however, before audiences find out what happens. If the spinoff is picking up after the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, it will surely have to explain just how this encounter played out.

John Wick 4 Clues Can Explain Caine's Missing Backstory
John Wick meets his old friend Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, and there are hints in the film that John and Caine were once assassin partners.
Caine obviously doesn't get killed during this post-credits scene since he's getting his own spinoff, and the spinoff now has an opportunity to bring back Akira as well. Although Shimazu's death sets Akira in opposition to Caine, Yen's character was very reluctant to actually kill Shimazu in the film and gave him chances to walk away. If Akira does return, it would be interesting to see these two characters have to work together against a greater threat, perhaps discovering a mutual respect for each other along the way.
Akira is not yet confirmed to return for the Caine John Wick spinoff, and it's entirely possible that the story will go in another direction. Considering how positive the John Wick: Chapter 4 reviews were and how interesting both Caine and Akira were, however, it would be a shame not to continue this story thread, especially since the conflict between them has already been established. Hopefully, more details about the Caine John Wick spinoff emerge in the coming months.
