J.K. Simmons, who earned fan adoration in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, is open to reprising his beloved J. Jonah Jameson performance once again. The highly biased, cigar-chomping newspaper editor JJJ provided hefty laughs across those three films, with Simmons’ performance becoming the iconic iteration of the character. Simmons is so synonymous with Jameson that, all these years later, a recast version has still not appeared in live-action form.

J. Jonah Jameson did have an email cameo in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, but, of course, that movie never came to fruition, with Sony choosing to work with Disney and induct a new version of Peter (now played by Tom Holland) into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Fans have already petitioned for Simmons to reprise J. Jonah Jameson in the MCU, and the actor has previously expressed an interest, stating, “I’ll never the close the door or anything.” Now, doubling down on that sentiment, Simmons has said this to Entertainment Tonight on the topic of going back to Jonah:

“I never say never. I mean, you know, obviously I had an amazing time with Sam Raimi on those movies, and Tobey [Maguire] and everybody. That was a great great time, and huge for my career and my life, and just pure fun. If there were an opportunity to revisit that.... I don’t know, though... how old is Spider-Man going to be if J. Jonah Jameson is this old?”

Simmons was clearly joking with his age concern comment at the end, but he does raise an interesting point. With Tom Holland’s Peter Parker being a very young man at the moment, you might expect Sony and Disney to skew a little younger for Jonah, if they did bring him into the MCU. That would make storytelling and business sense, in a way, but the fan demand to see Simmons return remains huge. It’s wise not to rule it out, then, because Kevin Feige and his Marvel Studios cohorts love pleasing the fans.

However, as positive as Simmons’ comments seem, you might still be worried that his current commitment to the DC Extended Universe (he will debut in Justice League as the new Commissioner Gordon) would get in the way of Simmons' potential return to the Spidey-verse. Interestingly, though, in that same interview, Simmons clarifies that there is no “contractual thing” to stop him being in two superhero universe at once. His fans across the globe will be keeping their fingers crossed, then.
