Jessica Jones and Daredevil are about to cross paths once more in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and if the comics are any indication, sparks could be flying. Fans of the two Defenders might how the two got along fairly well the first time they crossed over, but that's nothing compared to the bond they had in the comic books' canon.
role as Jessica Jones from her self-titled Netflix series and The Defenders. It’s a good get, not only because fans have been itching to see Jessica return, but because she and Daredevil had a small (if one-sided romance) in the comics.
Jessica Jones Had a Canonical Crush on Daredevil in the Comics
The Hardened Detective Actually Liked the Man Without Fear
When it comes to romance, fans all know about the love she has for Luke Cage. But before those two ever got together, Jessica Jones was crushing on the hero of Hell’s Kitchen. Jessica first appeared in the series Alias, and while she wasn’t one for the superhero life, she crossed paths with quite a few of them. One of the earliest heroes she encountered was Daredevil, who helped save Jessica from an intense interrogation as Matt Murdock and agreed to take her on as a client pro bono.
Daredevil and Jessica meet in Alias #3!
After Matt helps Jessica out of a legal jam, the two begin a friendly relationship. A later issue of Alias deals with Matt when his identity as Daredevil is leaked, and she agrees to help him out by pretending to by his bodyguard (if only to sell the illusion that he needs one). It doesn’t last for very long, but she and Matt continue to be friendly. However, Jessica seems to have deeper feelings than she lets on as she hears from Luke about a drunken rant she gave about how great Matt really is.
...nothing ever develops from this and the two never become more than friends.
That being said, nothing ever develops from this and the two never become more than friends. But as revealed in the miniseries The Variants, Jessica and Daredevil could have been a legit item. One version of Jessica from an alternate Earth fell in love with and even married her world's Matt. Unfortunately, he was killed by Stilt-Woman, sending Jessica into a deep depression. She did briefly get to meet Earth-616’s Daredevil and even kissed him. Beyond that, it’s always ended in friendship for Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
The MCU Should Definitely Play Up Jessica Jones and Daredevil's Bond
They Don't Need to Romance, But They Should Be Close
This friendship did somewhat carry over to The Defenders live-action miniseries, where Matt and Jessica shared a lot of scenes and had quite a bit of chemistry with each other. Of course, chances are they won’t go any further than the comics did. Aside from Jessica and Luke Cage being endgame, Daredevil: Born Again brought back Matt’s first love, Karen Page. While the series’ second season doesn’t need to have Jessica crushing on Daredevil, it absolutely should emphasize the friendly bond the two have together.
...fans would similarly get a kick out of Matt and Jessica being closer allies.
The MCU always works better when the shows more closely resemble the source material. Just as fans really want to see Jessica and Luke Cage get together, fans would similarly get a kick out of Matt and Jessica being closer allies. Hinting at a crush on Jessica’s part would be a great addition as well, but more than anything else, it would do both characters a lot of good if the next season of Daredevil: Born Again presents the two being closer than their previous appearances.
