most recognized television personalities of all time. Hailed as an icon, Trebek has appeared, as himself, in a slew of TV shows including Orange is the New Black, Jack Ryan, The X-Files, and The Golden Girls.
In 2019, Trebek shocked the nation when he revealed that he’d been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Unrelentingly, Trebek continued his Jeopardy! hosting duties and presided over the successful Jeopardy!: The Greatest of All Time tournament. Last November, after pushing through pain to film his final Jeopardy! episodes, Trebek ed away peacefully at the age of 80. Earlier this week, Jeopardy! kicked off the first of the final five episodes Trebek recorded, and the host continued to make his mark on viewers when the show released his touching appeal for kindness. Now, the time for Trebek’s swan song has arrived.
Jeopardy! paid tribute to the long time host Trebek at the end of his final episode, which aired on January 8, with a video highlighting the host’s best moments. Originally intended to air Christmas day, Trebek’s final episode was seemingly standard and featured a special category about Christmas movies. After the credits of Trebek’s final episode rolled, Jeopardy! aired a beautiful tribute video set to Peter Allen’s “Once Before I Go.” Watch the montage below:
Touting his iconic professionalism, the last category Trebek presented was” Women & Science.” Of course, the host gave a simple sign-off, not knowing the show would be his last, and told his viewers, “Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for spending the time with us. We’ll see you again next week.” Following the news of his death, Trebek has received countless tributes from celebrities, viewers, and former contestants. Indeed, Trebek continued to remain positive in his final days and even commented on his future memorial service. “One thing they’re not going to say at my funeral, as part of a eulogy is: ‘He was taken from us too soon,'” Trebek wrote in his memoir, The Answer Is…: Reflections on My Life.
Deemed far more than a game show host, Trebek has had a profound impact on audience , contestants, and fans. The host's dignified, pointed, and kind-hearted appearance is why millions of people have welcomed him into their homes. Trebek's final episode behind the podium certainly means the end of an era. While it remains to be seen who will fill Trebek's shoes as the permanent host of Jeopardy!, it was a relief for fans to have several episodes featuring Trebek after his ing. Alex Trebek leaves behind a legacy and will always be considered the greatest in Jeopardy! history.
