Within the 1990s timeline, Yellowjackets finally answers some long-standing questions from season 1, including revealing mysteries that Yellowjackets season 4 will need to address. Before Yellowjackets, Jasmin Savoy Brown Starred In HBO's Incredible Mystery Show The Leftovers

The Critically Acclaimed Series Is Now Considered One Of The Best Shows Of Recent Years

Yellowjackets has received rave reviews since it began airing in 2021, but, before landing the role of Taissa, Jasmin Savoy Brown appeared in another acclaimed series that ran for three seasons. From 2015 to 2017, Brown played the role of Evie Murphy in the HBO series The Leftovers. The Leftovers follows the survivors of an unexplained phenomenon that saw 2% of the world's population mysteriously disappear. The first season introduces the main characters and explores the new cult and religious movements that have sprung up in the aftermath.

Yellowjackets Season 4: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

After an extended wait, Yellowjackets finally returned for its third season in 2025, but will the horrifying thriller get renewed for season 4?

While season 1 of The Leftovers takes place in a fictional town in New York, season 2 switches locations to a Texas town called Jarden, where no one departed. Brown's character Evie and the rest of her family are introduced at the beginning of season 2. Evie is the teenage daughter of John and Erika, but shortly after being introduced, she goes missing. Along with the other mysteries that surround the departed, Evie's family attempts to determine if she ran away or ed the 2% of people who disappeared years earlier.

Just like Yellowjackets, The Leftovers unravels its mysteries slowly, forcing audiences to wait for big reveals. The series then both present new questions and continually establish the world that the characters exist within. While Brown is a recurring rather than main character, her performance as Evie is very impressive, especially considering how early it was in the star's career. This all makes The Leftovers a great comparison to the more recent Yellowjackets.

Yellowjackets & The Leftovers' Stories Have Often Been Compared To Lost

Both Mystery Shows Feature Some Similarities To The Iconic Sci-Fi Series

In addition to sharing an actor, both Yellowjackets and The Leftovers have garnered comparisons to the iconic science fiction series Lost, though often for different reasons. In the years since Lost ended, there have been various shows that have been touted as replacements thanks to their similar puzzle-box narratives or survival premises, but Yellowjackets and The Leftovers are arguably two of the more impressive options.

Whether this was Lindelof's intention at all, The Leftovers earned the comparisons through its focus on existential questions and the search for answers about those who departed.

The Leftovers did draw immediate conversation regarding Lost, but rather than repeating the plane crash formula, the initial comparisons came from the series creator, Damon Lindelof. Lindelof served as one of the creators of Lost, and following mixed reviews of the finale, The Leftovers was seen as a chance to reexamine some similar themes but create an ending that audiences found more satisfying. Whether this was Lindelof's intention at all, The Leftovers earned the comparisons through its focus on existential questions and the search for answers about those who departed.

After watching Shauna's villainous turn in Yellowjackets season 3, this HBO show with a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score is perfect to watch.

While Yellowjackets certainly has its fair share of mysteries that are unraveled throughout its three seasons, the most obvious reason that it has been seen as a Lost replacement is, quite simply, that it follows survivors of a plane crash through multiple different timelines. The survival aspects of the show and the mysteries of what the characters find in the wilderness tie the shows together, but Yellowjackets' focus on teenage girls and the chaotic adults that they become after being rescued adds its own unique twist.
