IO Interactive's Project 007 has finally been given an official title, 007 First Light, and will be revealed later this week. The Hitman developer announced the game almost five years ago in 2020, but practically no information has surfaced since.

According to a press release, IO Interactive has officially unveiled the title for 007 First Light alongside a teaser image showing a silhouette of James Bond. The game is set to receive its full reveal in the form of a trailer later this week, which will likely coincide with Sumer Game Fest's opening night live presentation. "The reveal will give a world premiere look at 007 First Light," says the press release, "featuring never-before-seen footage, and start a new era for James Bond in video games."

007 First Light Confirmed As The Title Of The New James Bond Game

A New Origin Story For The Famous Spy

Following years of anticipation, 007 First Light puts an official title on what has heretofore been known as Project 007, one of many games for Hitman developer IO Interactive. In the tweet above, the hashtag #EarnTheNumber seems to align with previously known information that 007 First Light will be a James Bond origin story, showing how he became a 00 Agent and earned his license to kill. IOI's Bond, however, is set to be a partially original character, an adaptation of Ian Fleming's iconic MI6 agent outside the novels' and films' canons, letting the game tell an original story.

Despite 007 First Light not yet being released – let alone unveiled – IOI has been vocal about 007 First Light being the participating developer and publisher at Summer Game Fest, so it's likely 007 First Light's reveal trailer will debut on Friday, June 6 during the show.

Our Take: 007 First Light Is The Most Exciting James Bond Project In The Works

I Don't Have Faith In Amazon's Bond 26

IO Interactive making a Bond game is enough to get excited about alone – the new Hitman trilogy is excellent, and there are a lot of spy-craft features that can carry over – but it may also end up being the franchise's most enticing release. Earlier this year, Amazon purchased the rights to creative control over the James Bond franchise from long-time Eon Productions producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Amazon's capacity to do the franchise justice has been questioned by fans, myself included.

Former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan even "laments" Amazon's takeover, and many are worried the brand will become saturated with spin-offs. Following Daniel Craig's departure from the films after 2021's No Time to Die, a new Bond actor has yet to be chosen for the franchise's 26th film. With IO Interactive's track record, I'm currently much more interested in 007 First Light's adaptation of the character. I've seen all 25 Bond films multiple times, and I won't have any confidence in Amazon until it actually delivers a compelling take on the character.
