Jack Black’s 2024 movie is the Christmas film Dear Santa, through which he’s paying off an unholy obsession that started with his project Tenacious D. With his comedic style and sense of humor, Jack Black has become one of the most beloved comedians and actors of his generation. Black’s filmography has covered a bit of everything, including rom-coms like The Holiday and even slashers with I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, but he’s best known (and praised) for his comedy projects.

In 1994, Black took his comedic skills to another level with the band Tenacious D, which he formed with fellow actor and comedian Kyle Gass. The comedy rock duo has found great success with its unique style and how it has branched out to other media. Tenacious D has starred in movies, TV shows, and made various collaborations, but there’s one strange yet funny and interesting obsession in their works: the devil, and this is finally paying off in Jack Black’s next Christmas movie in the best (and most ironic) way possible.

After Decades Of Tenacious D's Devil Obsession, Jack Black Is Playing Satan In A Christmas Movie

Jack Black Isn’t Meeting Satan – He Is The Devil

A recurrent character in Tenacious D’s career across all media is the devil himself. Satan has been included in the lyrics of Tenacious D’s songs from the beginning, and he made an appearance in the band’s movie, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. Co-written and directed by Liam Lynch, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny tells the (fictional) origin story of the band and their journey to find the magic pick that allows its s to become rock legends – and said pick belongs to Satan. In the movie, Satan was played by Foo Fighters’ vocalist Dave Grohl.

Satan has also appeared in Tenacious D’s music videos, becoming one of the band’s most recurring themes and a fun obsession. Now, all these years of Satan appearances, lyrics, and more are paying off thanks to Jack Black’s role in Dear Santa. Directed by Bobby Farrelly, Dear Santa follows Liam (Robert Timothy Smith), a young boy who, while writing his letter to Santa, gets his spelling all mixed up and addresses it to Satan (at the “North Lope”). Satan (Black) then shows up in Liam’s bedroom and tells him he can grant him three wishes, but he will take his soul after the third wish.

Satan then shows Liam everything he can grant him, going on different adventures with the kid and showing him “the good life”, but it soon becomes clear to Satan that Liam can’t be corrupted, and that he truly is a good kid at heart. Jack Black playing Satan after years of singing about him and meeting him in other media is an oddly satisfying payoff.

Throughout his career, Jack Black has been part of many comedy projects for different audiences, but he's currently on a streak of family movies – and it has been going great. In recent years, Black has been part of family movies like The House with a Clock in Its Walls, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, and Jumanji: The Next Level, but he was also part of the cast of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, where he played Wolfman Jack.
