With Invincible's speedy production proves it is fixing previous mistakes. In addition to returning less than a year after its most recent episode - this time without being split into two parts -season 3 will bring back two fan favorites, as confirmed by the official trailer.
After Invincible season 2's ending showed Mark's more aggressive side and highlighted shades of his father, the teaser doubled down on this theme. The primary focus was Mark's deteriorating relationship with Cecil, suggesting that the protagonist could follow Omni-Man's footsteps by opposing the GDA leader and working independently. While these snippets hint at an intense central story going forward, there will still be some comic relief as one of the show's best duos made an appearance in the early season 3 footage despite being absent for a long time, and their presence will instantly make the franchise much better.
The Mauler Twins Returning Is Great For Invincible Season 3
The Villainous Duo Adds Plenty Of Charm & Humor To The Series
Although Invincible's excellent story was still able to thrive without the Mauler Twins, their presence was missed in the latter half of season 2. Therefore, having them involved in the season will undoubtedly be a boost given what they bring to the series. Despite being geniuses who are genuinely competent villains, the duo often finds themselves in hilarious situations and working on the worst missions, providing some well-executed comedy to the show. They aren't solely used for comedy purposes, but their storylines usually have less weight than the main narrative, meaning they are great for providing pure entertainment.
Given they have been mainstay antagonists since the first episode, it seemed inevitable that they would be back at some stage. However, it was unclear if the Mauler Twins storyline would continue in Invincible season 3 until the trailer provided confirmation of their return. Considering the teaser puts the two at odds with Oliver during his early hero days, it seems likely they will once again get themselves into some unexpected trouble, which will hopefully provide a few laughs. Even if they are restricted to another small role, they'll still add a lot of value to season 3.
Why The Mauler Twins Are An Integral Part Of Invincible’s Story
Invincible Needs The Mauler Twins To Provide A Break From The Show's High Stakes, Emotional Action
Even if they aren't the franchise's biggest villains, the Mauler Twins still play a critical role in Invincible's overall narrative. With the central story getting more serious and emotional, it's important that the show still has comedic moments to break up the heavy action, making the Mauler Twins ideal candidates to achieve this. Allen the Alien and Rex Splode are undoubtedly hilarious, but their growing importance means they'll also have more high-stakes moments on the horizon. Assuming this coincides with Mark's darker arc, having characters like the Maulers and Shapesmith is vital to keeping the show's humorous identity.
Watching the twins break out of jail alongside the King Mauler plot was just as compelling as some of the central action, and their shenanigans could even make for a great spinoff or special episode.
In addition, the brutes are great at enhancing other characters' stories, as they were pivotal in Robot's mission throughout season 1 and played a key part in Angstrom Levy's transformation in season 2. Having the Mauler Twins interact with Oliver could also legitimize him as a hero and progress his character arc, while the twins are interesting enough to carry some action on their own. Watching them break out of jail alongside the King Mauler plot was just as compelling as some of the central action, and their shenanigans could even make for a great spinoff or special episode.

Invincible Season 3 Hypes Villain 10x Worse Than Season 2's Viltrumite
The first details about Invincible season 3 have been outlined, with the show teasing a villain much worse than season 2’ Viltrumite, Anissa.
Still, despite how silly and entertaining they can be, it's worth ing that the Mauler Twins are some of the most powerful characters that Invincible's TV show has shown so far, and while some Viltrumites and current characters will sur them, they remain a major threat. As a result, they could be elevated into a much bigger deal as the series progresses, or they could even be hired to fight against the Viltrumites for the right price, proving they are still an essential part of the story.
The Mauler Twins Aren’t The Only Villains Returning For Season 3
Battle Beast, Titan, & Doc Seismic All Featured In Season 3's Trailer
Seeing the Mauler Twins back in action in Invincible's recent trailer was a welcome surprise, but they aren't the only bad guys making their return in season 3. Earlier this year, Robert Kirkman confirmed Battle Beast and Titan will feature in Invincible's installment after they each featured in season 1, episode 5. Neither has been seen since, but they both had small roles in the trailer, while Doc Seismic also had an unexpected cameo. With all three villains set to cause problems in Invincible's next outing, the project looks like it will be filled with big personalities.
Invincible was nominated for Best Animated Series at the 2024 Critics' Choice Awards.
Titan and Doc Seismic can the Mauler Twins in that slightly lower jeopardy bracket of antagonists, which shows the franchise isn't moving away from its core. Although they won't provide the central heroes with their toughest test, they are still the sort of characters who helped audiences become so invested in the show initially. Furthermore, Battle Beast looked like one of the most menacing villains yet during his Invincible season 1 role, meaning his true potential may be explored with his next appearance, proving how exciting all the returning villains are to the franchise's future.
