Warning: this article contains spoilers for Inside Out 2The best justification for Inside Out 2's existence was always that Riley's teenage years would come with the usual flood of new and challenging emotions. In Pixar's typical fashion, that universal truth became the foundation for a profound exploration of big ideas, as Riley seeks to establish her sense of self while struggling to balance old and new emotions.
While the original Inside Out gave its main character Riley a simple combination of five emotions, Inside Out 2 gives the now 13-year-old a new spectrum of emotions. Alongside Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, four new main emotions are introduced (as well as a brief cameo by Nostalgia, who waits in the wings). In Inside Out 2, Riley faces the challenging time of beginning high school and maintaining her friendships as those new emotions vie for control of her brain.
Inside Out 2 introduces several new emotions that can be seen as replacements for Riley's emotions in the original movie. While all of Riley's previous emotions still exist, new emotions that change Riley are Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy, which all work to complicate Riley's responses to the events happening in her life.
And while four of the new emotions have similarities to the emotions introduced in Inside Out, creating direct rivalries, one of the first film's characters does not have a corresponding new emotion in Inside Out 2.
How Inside Out 2 Replaces The Original Emotions
Inside Out's Original Emotions Still Appear But Take A Back Seat To Riley's New Ones
Throughout Inside Out 2, Riley's original emotions still appear, but they struggle to regain control over her brain as she goes through puberty and experiences new things. In this fight over control, Joy, Sadness, Anger, and Disgust are countered by Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy. Anxiety serves as a precursor to Joy. Sadness and Embarrassment both want to help the other emotions but don't know how. Envy and Disgust serve as perfect mirrors of one another. And, despite their different primary states, Anger and Ennui both change how Riley behaves.

What Riley's Deep Dark Secret Is In Inside Out 2
Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger happen upon the deep corners of Riley's mind in Inside Out 2, even finding her Deep Dark Secret.
As Inside Out 2 progresses, the emotions must all work together to help Riley succeed as she navigates her teenage years. Luckily for fans of Inside Out 2 who are curious about what Riley and her emotions might do following hints at the possibility for further Inside Out movies featuring new emotions. Intriguingly, though, only one of Inside Out's original five emotions isn't actually replaced.
Fear Is The Only Emotion Not Replaced In Inside Out 2
There Is No Corresponding Emotion To Riley's Fear
Inside Out 2 gives Riley four new primary emotions to add to the original five, but none of them replace the effects of Fear. As the new emotions attempt to take over Riley's new Sense of Self throughout the movie, they contradict the decisions of her old emotions. This causes chaos within her mind, and it leads to Riley's personality changing drastically without her core emotions being in charge.
While Fear does not have a replacement in the same way Joy, Anger, Sadness and Disgust do, Inside Out 2 does briefly feature the appearance of the emotion Nostalgia. Nostalgia shows up briefly in the control center of Riley's brain and reminisces about all the emotions being together, though she is quickly escorted back out by Anxiety. Moreover, the sensations created by Fear and Nostalgia are very different, meaning that Nostalgia is not necessarily meant to replace Fear anyway.

Inside Out 2 is the sequel to the 2015 original film, which starred a young girl named Riley with a head full of emotions. - literally. With Amy Pohler as Joy, Bill Hader as fear, Mindy Kaling as Disgust, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger, the all-star cast brought to life the emotions that adolescents face as they grow, change, and adapt to new situations. This sequel, currently in development, will bring Amy Pohler back as Joy, with Riley, now a teenager.
