The Infinity Nikki fan community is reeling from a recent update that replaced the original introduction to the game with one that ties into the newest update, the Sea of Stars. Update 1.5 launched last week with the usual fanfare, new content, and inevitable bugs that tend to accompany large game updates. However, the game's developer, Infold, also made some changes that fans are unhappy about, leading to concerns about the game's future.

Players were outraged when they realized that the game also completely changed the introduction to the game, removing an outfit and a character, and retconning the story to relate to the new update. Fans were also upset that the update added an 11-piece outfit, which would require many gacha draws (and, in turn, many in-game purchases), but replacing the opening was the final straw for many. Heated discussion continues on the game's Discord server, where players share their discontent and worries about how the developer is treating its fanbase.

Infinity Nikki Fans React To The Game's Retconned Opening

Many Worry The Change Will Drive Away New Players

The original introduction to Infinity Nikki showed Nikki putting on a beautiful red dress and stepping into the world of Miraland with her cat-like companion Momo in tow. The new introduction throws players directly into the game in a gorgeous but confusing segment that replaces the red dress with the sparkling blue Sea of Stars dress and Momo nowhere in sight. The new intro also completely removes Ena—the bound character who originally gives Nikki her ultimate quest—from the game.

"The coziest open-world game," Infinity Nikki, is available for mobile devices, PC, and PS5, but Xbox and Switch s can enjoy these similar games.

The new beginning does a poor job of introducing players to the characters and the game and lacks the charm of the original, according to many fans. "My biggest grievance is that they took out the very charming opening cutscenes & retcon the story & made two important characters matter less," says Discord aurelia in an ongoing discussion about the changes.

Many also believe that having the Sea of Stars story at the beginning of the game just doesn't make sense as the players' first introduction to Nikki and her story. Discord Emmy says, "It doesn't quite have that same impact when you don't give players time to get attached to the world around them."

"[It] makes me lose faith in the game & the direction they're going."

More importantly, many fans feel that updating the introduction without letting the community know is simply underhanded and sneaky. "Making such a big change without addressing anything just makes me lose faith in the game & the direction they're going," says aurelia. Jun on Discord adds that the new opening to the game makes them "ashamed to recommend newer players" to the game.

Infinity Nikki Community Protests Changes With A "Girlcott"

The Community Refuses To Be Censored

Infinity Nikki players were so upset at the changes that they started a boycott, which was promptly silenced by Infold on its social media channels, according to Vice. In response, fans have started a new movement to "girlcott" the game, instead, refusing to let Infold stop them from airing their issues in public.

Attempting to censor the community from allegations of prioritizing cash grabs over what fans want has led many to be disappointed in Infold. The Infinity Nikki community continues to try and bring positive changes to what's supposed to be a cozy, welcoming title. Despite having a strong start, Infinity Nikki is currently getting protested across social media and review-bombed on Steam (it's currently sitting at a "mixed" rating), calling its future into question.
