Predictably, Link is the first character players will have available from the start of the game. During Chapter 1, Impa and Zelda will also unlock. Players will need to meet each additional character and complete an initial mission to unlock them and add them to their party. Here's how to unlock every available character in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity:
- Link: Unlocked from the start of a new game.
- Impa: Complete The Battle of Hyrule Field Chapter 1 mission.
- Zelda: Complete the Road to the Ancient Lab Chapter 1 mission.
- Mipha: Complete the Mipha, the Zora Princess Chapter 2 mission.
- Daruk: Complete the Daruk, the Goron Hero Chapter 2 mission.
- Revali: Complete the Revali, the Rito Warrior Chapter 2 mission.
- Urbosa: Complete the Urbosa, the Gerudo Chief Chapter 2 mission.
- Hestu: Complete the Freeing Korok Forest Chapter 3 mission.
- Sidon: Complete the Water and Fire Chapter 5 mission.
- Yunobo: Complete the Water and Fire Chapter 5 mission.
- Teba: Complete the Air and Lightning Chapter 5 mission.
- Riju: Complete the Air and Lightning Chapter 5 mission.

- Great Fairies: Complete all four Fairy Fountain challenges in Chapter 4. Accessed by completing the Offering Help on the Road quest, as part of the Trial of the Great Fairies quest.
- Monk Maz Koshia: Complete the Trial of the Ancients challenge in Chapter 4. Accessed after completing The Trial of Monsters, The Trial of the Mighty Foe, and The Trial of Stones.
- Terrako: After completing the main story, complete the Terrako's Return mission. This is also the way to unlock the secret ending.
- Ganon: Finish the main story, unlock Terrako, and complete challenges to level up to unlock the Level 71-80 challenges. Complete the Versus Calamity Ganon challenge.
The main story is not long, and players should be able to unlock all available characters either before or after the credits roll.
Each character has unique abilities that can help the player when the character s the party. The final four characters, the Great Fairies, Monk Maz Koshia, and Terrako and Ganon are some of the strongest in the game and will help the player complete greater challenges and face more difficult, higher-level enemies.
