Apologizing isn’t always easy, and that certainly is the case in Monkey Island series. Early in the game, players will need to apologize to a character. In casual mode, saying sorry is enough to progress through the game. However, the game’s hard mode throws in a special puzzle. For the apology to be accepted, players will need to use a special item called a forgiveness frog.

Return to Monkey Island’s protagonist Guybrush Threepwood has been through many previous adventures. There are now six entries in the series, which started in 1990. The series has had a lot of influence on other games, both in the adventure game genre and in plenty of different genres as well. There might soon be a Monkey Island crossover with Sea of Thieves for “wannabe pirates” to be excited about. If there is a game featuring pirates, players can probably expect that there will be some easter egg featuring Monkey Island, even if it isn’t by name.

Throughout his adventures, Guybrush Threepwood has faced off against the evil undead pirate LeChuck multiple times. Somehow, he has managed to emerge victorious each time, or at least he can still count himself among the living. Despite his many heroics, the residents of the Caribbean have trouble ing his name, though this might be due to characters with similar names like Mancomb Seepgood. Guybrush has helped many people along the way. Unfortunately, he also has wronged many others, and since Return to Monkey Island has returning characters, he might find himself having to apologize, which is where the forgiveness frog comes in.

Using the Forgiveness Frog in Return to Monkey Island

Return to Monkey Island Forgiveness Frog

At one point early in Return to Monkey Island, players will find themselves needing to apologize to Carla, who is the current governor of Mêlée Island. Carla is a familiar face, as she has appeared in two other games in the series, The Secret of Monkey Island and Escape from Monkey Island. She was at one time a sword master and later served on Guybrush’s crew in both games, though she wasn’t the greatest crew member. To Carla’s credit, though, most of his crew in the games have been largely useless, leaving Guybrush to do nearly everything himself. So now Carla shows up once again, albeit in a different art style of Return to Monkey Island. Guybrush needs to borrow a cookbook, but Carla is upset that Guybrush borrowed one of her books and did not return it. For that, he must apologize.

However, a simple apology won’t suffice for players in hard mode. To properly apologize, players need to get the forgiveness frog and write a personal apology on it. What they need to write changes with every game, so players will need to find the pertinent information about Carla. The forgiveness frog is purchased from the International House of Mojo on Low Street. While there, look at the side of the building where Carla’s statue is. It is where players first encounter Elaine in Return to Monkey Island. The statue tells that Carla is recognized for her actions in a specific place which players should take note of. Next, players must look at Carla’s campaign poster down at the docks with her slogan.

Now players have what they need to pen an apology. Use the quill in Guybrush’s inventory with the forgiveness frog, and make sure to put in the correct actions and slogan that Carla is known for. Now, Carla will relent, and players get the cookbook, which means they can continue with the story of Return to Monkey Island.
