Apple introduced Live Activities on iPhones with the release of iOS 16, but the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max take this feature a step further letting s follow live sporting events on the Dynamic Island. Live Activities are designed to provide current updates on time-sensitive matters, like tracking a delivery or rideshare request. While this is very useful for live tracking, Apple has another use case in mind for Live Activities and the Dynamic Island: tracking the scores of sporting events.
Sports fans would love to watch every event live, but that just isn't possible. As a result, they often find themselves switching back and forth between an online game feed and other apps. Thanks to for Live Activities, iPhone s can now choose to follow a specific game and view live updates and score changes on the Dynamic island and the lock screen. A handful of apps currently live sports scores, including the Apple TV app (for NBA, MLB, and Premier League games), NBA app, MLB app, and more recently, the NCAA March Madness Live app.
Follow Live Sporting Events In The Apple TV App
To get live scores from the Apple TV app, scroll down to the 'Sports' tab on the 'Watch Now' page. A few popular or live sporting events will be displayed here, but s can tap the arrow next to the 'Sports' tab to view the full sports page. At the top of this page, a 'Watch Live' option will show all current and sporting events in one place.
For s who know exactly what event they're looking for, the 'Search' page can be used to find an event, team, or league. Once they've found the game they want to follow, tap the game title to open its standalone page. Current events will have a 'Follow' button on this page, and clicking that button will activate the Live Activity for that contest. On iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, the Live Activity will appear on the Dynamic Island, providing scores and updates at a glance.
The feature will likely be ed on more leagues in the future, and s can't follow games that are currently delayed, suspended, or have ended. Despite a few limitations, Apple's game-tracking feature is a great tool for sports fans who want to multitask while following an ongoing event on their iPhone 14 Pro.
The Sports Alerts App Displays More Live Scores
While the number of apps that live scores on the Dynamic island are still quite limited, a handy little app called Sports Alerts displays scores for a range of sports and leagues. The ed leagues include MBL, NFL, NBA, NHL, WNBA, NCAA, UEFA Champions League, Premier League, ATP, WTA, PGA, NASCAR, Formula 1, and more. While the app doesn't broadcast the live games, it does display live scores, and s can customize alerts for their selected leagues.
To customize alerts, s can tap the 'Alerts' tab, select their league of choice, and then choose which alerts they'd like to receive. If s have an iPhone 14 Pro model, live scores will be displayed on the Dynamic island. Long-pressing the Dynamic Island will show an expanded view with more information. Other iPhones will display the live scores on the lock screen.
