A sci-fi comedy starring Jim Parsons has had a boost on streaming nine years after its debut. Parsons is best known for playing the role of Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, which he reprised as the narrator of the prequel series Young Sheldon, starring Iain Armitage as the younger version of the character. In addition to starring in all 12 seasons of the iconic sitcom, over the years, Parsons won four Emmys for his performance as Sheldon out of six nominations for the role.
The Big Bang Theory star has also starred in a variety of projects in various genres despite being best known for playing Sheldon Cooper. This includes the Ryan Murphy historical drama Hollywood, the autobiographical romantic comedy Spoiler Alert, and the Zac Efron-led Ted Bundy crime drama Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. However, despite Sheldon's predilection for the genre, Parsons himself has only appeared in one sci-fi movie, which has now hit a major streaming chart.
Home Has Become A Streaming Success
Parsons Plays A Kooky Alien Invader In The 2015 Movie
Parsons' 2015 movie Home has now made an appearance on the chart of a major streaming platform. The DreamWorks animated feature followed a kooky alien named Oh (Parsons) who befriends human teenager Tip Tucci (Rihanna) during his species' attempted invasion of Earth. The Home cast also included Steve Martin, Matt Jones, Jennifer Lopez, and Frank Welker. Although the movie earned a 53% Rotten Tomatoes score, its audience score is a Fresh 64% and it grossed $386 million against its $135 million budget.
Home was the fourth highest-grossing animated movie of 2015, behind Hotel Transylvania 2 ($474.8 million), Inside Out ($858.3 million), and Minions ($1.16 billion).
Now, Home has begun to climb the chart of the NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock. It has landed at No. 5 on the streamer's daily Top 10 movies chart. It is by far the oldest movie in the Top 5, as other than the seasonally appropriate movie The Grinch (2018) at No. 1, the remainder of the chart is made up of 2024 releases, namely Twisters (No. 2), Despicable Me 4 (No. 3), and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (No. 4).
What This Means For Home
The Full Franchise Could Return To Streaming
It seems unlikely that the streaming success of the Jim Parsons movie will lead to talk of a sequel, as there have never been major stirrings of a feature-length follow-up to the DreamWorks movie, despite its theatrical success. However, one possible result of its Peacock success could be the return of the spinoff 2D-animated series Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh, which debuted on Netflix in 2016 but was removed from the platform in April 2024. Should the movie continue to perform well, Peacock may be encouraged to find a way to add the four-season show to their library.
