While there are many titles to look forward to in 2025, none have managed to create the same excitement and anticipation as achieve unbelievable commercial success upon its release, but it's also believed that GTA 6 will be widely considered as the Game of the Year for 2025. It's a fair assumption to make, given Rockstar Games' reputation and library of critically-acclaimed titles, such as Red Dead Redemption 2.
However, GTA 6 might have just been given some stiff competition for the GOTY title. Long-awaited indie darling Hollow Knight: Silksong has just received a promising new update on its Steam page, indicating that the game could release in the near future. As someone who has been anticipating the release of Silksong for quite some time, I believe that a 2025 release means that GTA 6 could lose the GOTY title that it was almost certainly going to attain.
Silksong's Steam Page Just Received An Update
The Game Could Finally Release In 2025
Hollow Knight: Silksong just received a promidate to its Steam page. This comes from Reddit thelazycoati, who posted a link to Silksong's SteamDB page on the game's subreddit. The SteamDB page shows a number of changes that have been made to Silksong's listing on Steam, including the addition of cloud gaming categories. However, the most notable change to Silksong's Steam page has been the new copyright, switching the year from 2019 to 2025, which has caused many fans to speculate that the game could finally release this year.
This isn't the first time that minor updates have caused the Silksong community to speculate on the game's release. That being said, what makes this update so intriguing is this marks the first time that Silksong's copyright has been altered since the game's initial reveal all the way back in 2019. It seems unusual for the game to have suddenly been given a copyright update after so many years, giving fans hope that the game could finally release in 2025.
The last official update that Hollow Knight: Silksong received came in January, as the game's Marketing and PR Director, Matthew Griffin, confirmed that the title was still in development after a theory surrounding its next showcase was debunked.
While this update gives no confirmation of Silksong's progress and planned release, the news does provide me with a huge sense of relief. The major delays that Silksong has received, alongside the long waits between updates from developer Team Cherry, have begun to make me worry over the game's development. This change to Silksong's Steam page, regardless of how minimal it may seem, provides me with the reassurance I need over Silksong's status, giving me confidence that the game will release in the near future.
How Silksong Could Become 2025's GOTY
The Original Hollow Knight Made A Huge Impact
What has me more excited about Silksong's potential 2025 release is how the game could serve as one of the year's best offerings. It's hard to deny the huge impact that the original Hollow Knight made during its release. Whether it was the game's beautiful atmosphere and setting, or the huge variety and challenge offered by the combat, Hollow Knight was a stellar debut title from Team Cherry and one of the most influential Metroidvanias of the last decade.
In comparison, Silksong looks to refine and expand on what Hollow Knight did so well. The few trailers that have been released for Silksong detail a variety of new enemies, bosses, characters, and locations to discover, helping to craft a larger and more intricate world than Hollow Knight had achieved. Moreover, the number of new abilities, upgrades and secrets for you to discover places a much larger emphasis on exploration, encouraging you to lose yourself in this unfamiliar kingdom.
Silksong is not content with being a simple follow-up to Hollow Knight.
The clear determination by Team Cherry to make Silksong a worthy successor to Hollow Knight is what makes me so sure of the game's quality. Silksong is not content with being a simple follow-up to Hollow Knight, once again challenging and rethinking the conventions of the Metroidvania genre and the ideas of its predecessor in order to craft a wholly original experience. If Silksong can offer the same unique and groundbreaking ideas that made the original Hollow Knight such a huge success, I believe the game could end up claiming the title of GOTY from GTA 6.
Silksong Is The Only Game With A Chance To Beat GTA 6 For GOTY
Both Games Have Huge Expectations To Meet
In a lot of ways, Silksong feels like the only game that could stand a chance against GTA 6 in the race for GOTY. Of course, there's a lot that sets both Silksong and GTA 6 apart from each other, with both games offering entirely different gameplay experiences as a side-scrolling Metroidvania and open-world action game respectively, which will attract different audiences. However, what brings these two games together is the popularity and high expectations that currently surround both titles.

2025 Could Be One Of The Most Exciting Years Ever For Video Games - If We Just Get These 3 Release Dates
Many players are likely hoping that 2025 brings with it some exciting new video game announcements, specifically for these three anticipated games.
Both Silksong and GTA 6 are installments in hugely successful and highly respected franchises that are known for their level of quality, almost guaranteeing either game's commercial success upon release. However, the status that each series has attained means that these new entries are faced with unusually high expectations that other major titles aren't being put up against. With such a high bar being set for both Silksong and GTA 6, it will surely be a top priority for Team Cherry and Rockstar Games to deliver the best games possible, putting both titles at a similar level of quality.
Hollow Knight: Silksong has been one of the most wishlisted games on Steam since its reveal, occupying the top spot on multiple occasions.
If Silksong does release in 2025, it's unclear how the game will ultimately fare compared to Grand Theft Auto 6. That being said, I can't help but feel that Silksong could be the game that comes out on top. With Team Cherry showing the same sense of ambition towards Silksong as it did with Hollow Knight, there's a chance that the studio will deliver another incredible Metroidvania that creates the same monumental impact its predecessor achieved, making the game a clear choice for 2025's GOTY.

In Silksong, players will take on the role of Princess Hornet, a far more agile and combat-ready hero than the Knight in the previous title, with a stronger emphasis on aerial combos and gameplay. Stuck in a new strange land, Hornet will battle her way through all-new environments outside of Hollownest to find her way back while saving this new kingdom.
