This may sound simple, but with randomly occurring Action Cards the game can turn on its head at a moment’s notice, and it gets rather competitive and strategic. The game is designed for 2-4 players between the ages of 7-107, if you have a 108-year-old grandparent, apologize on the game’s behalf for their exclusion.

If you’re buying for someone who has shown interest in science or geology or is just generally inquisitive and interested in the world around them, this may be the last-minute toy gift for you. Whilst playing Catan, the player takes on the role of a settler who is attempting to build holdings and requires resources to erect more holdings. As the game continues, the settlers acquire victory points and the winner is the first to reach 10 victory points in total.

The game board is made out of 19 different hexes which the players have to arrange before the game, depending on the layout of the board you can make the game either easy or difficult, so if you are playing with younger settlers during the holiday season you can make the game easier for their benefit. Since the board is modular, being able to arrange the hexes accordingly to the difficulty is an attribute of the game as the more familiar you get with Catan the more creative the games can become, always remaining exciting and worthwhile. If this seems a little daunting, to begin with, Catan comes with an instruction book that will tell you how to arrange it for an easier difficulty. Catan recommends that players should be 10 years old or older, and it is designed for 3 or 4 players. Game time can vary depending on the difficulty of the game, but it will usually take a player around 60 minutes to accumulate 10 victory points to achieve victory. Many strategies are needed to accomplish victory, but there is also an element of probability as the resources that come up are determined by a roll of a die. It’s no surprise to anyone that a LEGO product has landed a spot on our list of the best last-minute toy gifts, LEGO has been a much-loved favorite for years and the Danish company that invented the recognizable building blocks as early as 1932. Their determination to keep relevant has also seen them collaborate with Minecraft, the sandbox game developed by Mojang Studios, which has been incredibly popular among the younger gamers out there.

This particular LEGO Minecraft set features familiar figures such as the annoying Zombie, the foxes and a hero figure who is wearing a rather cute fox ‘skin’. The fox lodge is interactive as the roof can lift off enabling imaginative role-play both inside and outside. There are some fun accessories that come with the pack including the infamous diamond sword, a torchlight, and a fishing rod with a fish. Okay, so this may be the silliest gift on our list, but it’s also one of the funniest. When we initially came across this we immediately thought of a certain character from a show about two space-traveling, universe-saving family and fell in love with it from the get-go. Although this toy isn’t based on Pickle Rick, it is as equally hilarious and will provide hours of totally mindless entertainment that will make a great last-minute toy gift this holiday season.
