DC’s Universe is going through major changes in order to reboot it, and it has once more put the future of Henry Cavill’s Superman at risk, even though his return was announced not long ago. Although the DCU (formerly known as the DCEU) has been going through many changes for years now as it has failed to build a cohesive connected universe, it’s now going through its biggest shake-up as James Gunn and Peter Safran have become co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios. Gunn confirmed they were already working on a new 10-year plan, and some details about it have now been revealed.
Before Man of Steel 2 and more appearances of the character in other projects from the DCU, along with the expansion of the stories of other beloved characters, but now that the first parts of their big plan for the future of the DCU have been revealed, Superman’s future is at risk one more time.
Superman's DCU Future Is Very Uncertain Again, Despite Henry Cavill's Return
On October 24, and following his surprise cameo in The Flash movie, but with his future now unclear, it wouldn’t be surprising if this cameo was cut.
Surely, this is just one part of the 10-year-plan Gunn and Safran have been working on and which they are expected to present to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav in a couple of days, so there’s still a chance (even if slight) that there’s something else planned for Cavill’s Superman, and all the excitement and speculation around his return and future in the DCU won’t be in vain – for now, however, his future isn’t clear.
Why The DCU Is Struggling So Much With Superman
Henry Cavill had left the DCU, though he later shared that he hadn’t given up the role of Superman.
Since then, the future of Cavill’s Superman has been uncertain, especially after Michael B. Jordan and J.J. Abrams were said to be working on a new Superman movie without Cavill’s involvement, and the DCU doesn’t seem to know where to take the character now. Both Justice League movies left the door wide open for Superman’s return and left many questions about him that need to be answered, but Cavill is now caught in the transition period, and the “fresh start” that his cameo in Black Adam was supposed to be no longer is. Between Cavill’s busy schedule with other projects, the DCU’s failures with his story in Dawn of Justice, the uncertainty of Man of Steel 2, and his unexciting return in both Justice League movies, Superman has become DC’s hardest character to develop.
Why DC Still Needs Henry Cavill's Superman
As mentioned above, Superman is the character that kicked off the DCU, and as such, it deserves to get some closure. Cavill’s Superman had a strong start in Man of Steel, but it all went downhill in Dawn of Justice, and he hasn’t been given an engaging and exciting story ever since. Now, Ben Affleck’s Batman is set to return in The Flash and Henry Cavill’s return and future in the DCU have been endlessly teased and rumored since his supposed departure in 2018, and it would be a big waste to officially announce his return only to put him back in DCU limbo weeks later.
