HBO is well known for being a reliable source of prestige television, with new and returning series releasing in 2024. HBO's 2023 lineup saw the conclusion of some of their best and most popular shows. Succession and Barry both ended in their fourth seasons. His Dark Materials concluded after season 3 while Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty returned for season 2 but was not renewed for a third. Lastly, The Idol was incredibly divisive and concluded after only one season.

The most popular HBO shows, such as The Sopranos and The Wire, highlight the legacy the network has created. That said, 2024 will see fewer shows released following the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. For example, shows like Euphoria, The White Lotus, and The Last of Us are confirmed to be delayed until 2025. Luckily, there's still plenty of great TV coming up on HBO.

9 The Penguin

The Batman was a successful reboot for the DC superhero, and while it is not part of the new DCU, Warner Bros. is capitalizing on Matt Reeves' iteration of the character by expanding it with spin-offs. HBO's The Penguin will follow Colin Farrell's portrayal of the classic Batman villain, continuing where the film left off in Gotham City after Carmine Falcone's death. The trailer shows a gritty series that sees Penguin trying to carve out his own place in Gotham by any means necessary.

Robert Pattinson is not officially cast in the first spinoff series of The Batman.

During an interview with The Penguin TV show would premiere in September 2024. While the series is not part of James Gunn's rebooting of the DCU, it s Matt Reeves' The Batman and the new Joker movie as DC properties that continue to come, while not based in the same shared universe as the superhero movies with Superman, Green Lantern, and more.

On top of Farrell as Penguin, the series will also star Cristin Milloti as Sofia Falcone, Carmine's daughter, a serial killer, and Rhenzy Feliz, a teenager who becomes Penguin's new driver. Mark Strong, Clancy Brown, Scott Cohen, Theo Rossi, and Michael Kelly are also appearing. There will be eight episodes that will air, with the finale coming on November 10.

8 Gremlins (Season 2)

The second season of the Gremlins animated series on Max will arrive in October, just in time for Halloween. The series has the subtitle Gremlins: The Wild Batch, and it will see Gizmo, Sam, and Elle traveling from Shanghai to San Francisco. The first season was titled Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai and focuses on how 10-year-old Sam Wing first met Gizmo. This aired in May 2023 and served as a prequel series to the original Gremlins movie. It debuted on both Max and Adult Swim.

Sam, Gizmo, and Elle will head to San Francisco after a new batch of evil Mogwai is created.

The second season was greenlit before the first aired, which worked well since the premiere season has a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also earned nominations at the Saturn Awards, Annie Awards, and Producers Guild Awards. The new story should be interesting since Sam, Gizmo, and Elle will head to San Francisco after a new batch of evil Mogwai is created.

The voice cast is great, with Izaac Wang (Raya and the Last Dragon) voicing Sam, Ming-Na Wen (The Mandalorian) voicing Sam's mother Fong, BD Wong (Jurassic Park) as Sam's father Hon, James Hong as Grandpa, Gabrielle Nevaeh as Elle, and A.J. LoCascio as Gizmo.

7 The Franchise

One of the most exciting new original series of 2024 is The Franchise, an HBO comedy created by Armando Iannucci with Sam Mendes (1917, Skyfall) involved in directing. Billy Magnussen will star, with Richard E. Grant and Daniel Brühl in recurring roles. The new series will follow a film crew producing a superhero film, with a first look shown in HBO's 2024 trailer.

The Franchise is set to premiere in October 2024, but the plot is being kept under wraps. The series is called a comedy, so it seems that the difficulties faced while making the superhero film will be comedic in nature. The cast includes Himesh Patel (EastEnders), Aya Cash (The Boys), Lolly Adefope (Ghosts), Darren Goldstein (Ozark), Jessica Hynes (Spaced), and Richard E. Grant (Withnail and I). It is currently unclear how many episodes will appear in the first season.

6 Somebody Somewhere (Season 3)

Another beloved HBO comedy-drama returning in 2024 is Somebody Somewhere, which is set to debut its third season. The series follows Sam, a woman in her 40s struggling after the ing of her sister. The series has earned widespread acclaim for its candid, earnest characters and themes and was renewed for another season shortly after Somebody Somewhere season 2 ended. The announced release date is October 27, 2024.

This is also going to be the final season of the series, so the showrunners have a chance to end the show with a satisfying conclusion, knowing the end was coming ahead of time. Just like in the first two seasons, there will be seven episodes in the final third season, which means it will play into December before airing its finale. Season 2 mostly sets up new storylines for Sam to hopefully find a future relationship with someone and further steps in her grieving process.

5 Dune: Prophecy

Dune: Prophecy is set to premiere in the fall of 2024. Following the massive box office and critical success of Dune: Part Two, Dune: Prophecy will center exclusively on the Bene Gesserit and offer a deeper look into the mystical group that plays such an integral part in Denis Villeneuve's Dune films. HBO's Dune: Prophecy's cast is led by Emily Waston as Tula's older sister, Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen. The series is based on books written by Kevin J. Anderson and Dune author Frank Herbert's son, Brian Herbert.

4 Harley Quinn (Season 5)

The fifth season of Harley Quinn is coming in November 2024. While not part of the new DCU under James Gunn, the adult animated series will continue on in its own pocket of the universe with the DC villain and her friends and enemies continuing to try to survive in Gotham City. The series follows Harley Quinn (voiced by Kaley Cuoco) as she tries to make it after leaving her boyfriend Joker (Alan Tudyk).

Harley is in a relationship with Poison Ivy (Lake Bell), and the two attempt to get through the days without breaking too many laws. The new season will also see a change of scenery, as Kite Man: Hell Yeah! shows that Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are house hunting and they are going to be moving to Metropolis. It is also hinted that the new season will feature more DC heroes and villains appearing on the show rather than limit it to Batman's rogues' gallery in Gotham City.

3 The Sex Lives Of College Girls (Season 3)

November 2024

Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble's HBO series The Sex Lives of College Girls was a hit for the network, being renewed before season 2 ended. Season 2, which premiered in November 2022, concluded with substantial drama, with issues stirring between Pauline Chalamet's Kimberly and Alyah Chanelle Scott's Whitney, among other plot lines. The Sex Lives of College Girls season 3 was announced to be returning in the first half of 2024 but was held back until November instead.

The series has been a huge success for Ma., with over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes for each of the first two seasons, although the two-year wait for season 3 might hurt the anticipation a little. When it returns, there will be new cast , though, with Devin Craig, Ruby Cruz, Michael Provost, and Roby Attal all singing on as new recurring student characters. However, with the new characters, the show will also lose pop star Reneé Rapp, who will leave during season 3.

2 Creature Commandos

For anyone excited to see James Gunn's new vision for the DCU since taking over creative control, the first product is a Max animated series arriving in December 2024. This is a new property called Creature Commandos, and it will feature the return of Amanda Waller (with Viola David reprising the role). She has been banned from sending out human villains as The Suicide Squad, so she has found a loophole that lets her send out "monsters" to do her bidding and stop world threats.

These include G.I. Robot (an android voiced by Sean Gunn), Weasel (the villain returning from The Suicide Squad, also voiced by Sean Gunn), Eric Frankenstein (voiced by David Harbour), Doctor Phosphorus (voiced by Alan Tudyk), and Bride of Frankenstein (voiced by Indira Varma). They are also led by Rick Flagg St. (Frank Grillo). Gunn has said that the animated shows will be in the same world as the live-action, and if there is a crossover, the same voice actors will play the characters.
