The original Gossip Girl is a TV series that aired from 2007 through 2012 and is based on a series of young adult novels by the same name. The series may have ended, but HBO Max announced that a reboot of the series was on the way and would be airing on that streaming service starting in 2021.
Although there isn't a lot of news about the new reboot just yet, a lot of fans of the original series are definitely already excited. So far, HBO Max has announced that this reboot will be set in the same universe as the original Gossip Girl series, but won't necessarily have a connection to the original series. This means that it won't be a sequel or feature characters connected to Blair, Dan, and Serena, but will likely feature some familiar storylines and locations.
Some Amazing Fashion
Because the original Gossip Girl series was so focused on a group of upper class students living in New York, the show had a heavy focus on the amazing fashion that these wealthy teens wore. From the trendiest outfits to the coolest designer bags, the outfits in Gossip Girl were definitely top notch. And because this series is going to be a reboot set in the same universe as the original, the show will definitely have some of the trendiest clothes of the 2020s.
Old Favorite Characters
So far, HBO Max hasn't given a ton of details on how the new Gossip Girl series will connect to the old one. This means that they haven't given fans a lot of information about whether or not there will be any connections to old characters, but that hasn't stopped fans from seriously hoping that they'll make the occasional appearance in the new show. Although it'll definitely be awesome for fans of the original series to see a more modern twist with new characters, that doesn't mean that seeing Blair or Serena pop back up wouldn't be a ton of fun.
Like Nate Archibald
During the finale of the original Gossip Girl series, Nate Archibald announced his plans to run for mayor of New York City. This was a big deal because it meant that Nate would be the youngest mayor in the city's history. Even if Nate didn't make it to office, it's safe for fans to assume that he likely stayed in politics in some regard and is likely still a big deal around the city.
Because of this, Nate making an appearance in the new series would be a ton of fun for viewers to see. He had some big plans for his future and it would be nice to see if they worked out for him and what he's up to these days.
Or At Least References To Them
Even if the series doesn't actively feature an old character from the original series, many fans hope that the show will at least mention them. The series is going to be set in the same universe and considering Blair, Serena, Dan, Chuck, and all the other main characters were such a hot topic in their social group, it's likely that this new generation of Upper East Side teens is aware of them. So, having them come up in conversation would be a fun reference to the original series.
Chuck & Blair's Son
The new Gossip Girl reboot is going to star a whole new cast of characters that have their own lives and own storyline. Although fans would love to see the original characters make an appearance, it's not looking particularly likely at this point. But, there is one character from the original series that would be fun to see appear in the new series would be Henry Bass, son of Chuck and Blair. Henry only appeared in the time jump and it's assumed he was probably born somewhere around 2013, so he wouldn't be old enough to be a main character, but there are still a lot of ways the writers could work this character in.
Celebrity Cameos
There were a good number of celebrities that had cameos and guest roles on the original Gossip Girl series. From Rachel Bilson to Hilary Duff and Brittany Snow, a ton of big name stars made appearances on the show during different points in the series.
Outside of hoping for cameos from the original cast, many Gossip Girl fans are hoping that there are some major stars that make appearance on HBO Max's new reboot of the series. Stars like Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish that are so known for their fashion would be perfect guest stars for the new generation of Gossip Girl.
Social Media
Although cell phones and the Internet were definitely a big part of the original Gossip Girl series, social media wasn't quite as prevalent in the lives of the characters then as it would be now. Since social media is such a big part of many people's lives and sharing pictures of their outfits, their meals, and their vacations is something that is pretty common for a lot of people, it's definitely going to have to be part of the new Gossip Girl reboot.
Another Flashback Episode
Valley Girls was the almost-spinoff series from Gossip Girl that was going to bet set in the 1980s and was going to follow the life of a young Lily van der Woodsen. An episode of Gossip Girl that was set in the same era and showed Lily as a wealthy teen in the 80s aired as a setup for the series, but the spinoff never came to fruition.
Still, one thing that would be a ton of fun to see would be another flashback episode. If the new Gossip Girl is anything like the original, there will definitely be some parental drama. And the new generation's parents were likely teens in the 1990s, meaning that there would be a new generation of fashion and culture for a flashback episode to feature.
Old Locations
Even if the new series doesn't feature old Gossip Girl characters, fans will definitely want to see some of the old locations that were featured in the original series. Since this new reboot is going to be set in the same universe, it's a safe bet for fans that the show will probably feature Constance Billard School for Girls and other iconic locations from the original series.
An Interesting Spin On Gossip Girl's Identity
Kristen Bell, the actress that voiced the omnipresent blogger known as Gossip Girl in the original series, will be returning to this reboot for the same role. But, one thing that the creators have said is that Gossip Girl won't necessarily be a single person like in the original series. The creators have stated that the series will be a modern take and instead of having a single blogger tracking the dramatic lives of the main characters, it will be more focused on how everyone can play that role in modern society thanks to social media.
