film and television productions came to an equally abrupt halt worldwide. As of late, US states are gradually lifting lockdown orders, leaving the population to workshop how to resume everyday activities amid a pandemic. While it remains to be seen when a COVID-19 vaccine will hit the markets, one of Hollywood’s top producers is bringing the hunt for a vaccine to the small screen.

Per Deadline, McKay has partnered with HBO to adapt The First Shot into a limited drama series. Last year, McKay inked a five-year, first-look deal with the cable network following the producer’s work on Succession. Penned by acclaimed journalist Brendan Borrell, The First Shot is a forthcoming nonfiction novel that centers on the global hunt for a coronavirus vaccine. The First Shot explores the companies and individuals who risk everything, the science the vaccine is based on, and the challenges that are occurring with politics, access, and safety. At the time of this writing, McKay’s limited coronavirus series remains untitled.

Previously, Borrell published investigative works on the coronavirus pandemic in National Geographic, Science Magazine, and Wired. At this time, the coronavirus pandemic, and a successful vaccine are at the forefront of the public’s mind. Given Vice and The Big Short, Borrell’s work could do well in McKay’s hands. Toting the hot topic of a coronavirus vaccine, and fueled by true reports, McKay’s limited coronavirus series could be a winner for HBO.
