Here's every reveal and secret contained within the first trailer for Disney+'s Black Widow and, most importantly of all, Lucky the Pizza Dog will feature.
Set to release on November 24, it's fair to say Clint Barton's comeback isn't anticipated quite as hotly as Spider-Man: No Way Home), MCU fans should know by now not to underestimate Hawkeye.
Taking an in-depth look at the trailer footage, Hawkeye will be part continuation of Clint Barton's Avengers: Endgame story, part setup for the future, adding another Young Avenger to the MCU's lineup. These are all the major takeaways from Marvel's very first Hawkeye trailer.
A Barton Family Christmas
The Hawkeye trailer opens on Clint enjoying a festive meal in New York with his 3 children, Nathaniel, Lila and Cooper. Lila mentions how this is their first Christmas together "in years" which is obviously true, since the entire Barton family (sans Hawkeye himself) got snapped by Thanos. For Lila, however, those 5 years never happened. Perhaps Clint's Avenger duties kept him from spending holidays at home even before the snap.
Steve Rogers: The Musical
Since Steve Rogers hung up his shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame, the world has been celebrating Brooklyn's skinny-kid-come-good. We've seen various tributes to Cap through Hawkeye reveals "Rogers: The Musical" is now an MCU Broadway production, described as a "timeless story for a timeless hero" and "a super-powered sensation." More than anything, the Rogers musical demonstrates how Marvel is transitioning Captain America and Iron Man into legacy figures for Phase 4.
Hawkeye Isn't Even His Kids' Favorite Avenger
In an amusing detail, it seems Clint takes his kids to see Rogers: The Musical. Because even their favorite Avenger isn't Hawkeye.
Kate Bishop Is A Masked Vigilante
The Hawkeye trailer's first proper plot exposition comes via a news report about a "masked vigilante." Clint Barton's work as Ronin (between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame) was apparently noticed on both sides of the moral divide. The world hasn't deduced Ronin and Hawkeye are the same, and now Barton has left his darker mantle behind, another masked do-gooder has stepped up to paint the underworld red in his stead.
Why Hawkeye Leaves His Family (Again)
Clint Barton was under house arrest when Thanos arrived, and only returned to the field because his family got dusted. With the Barton clan restored, fans were wondering what could possibly drag Hawkeye back into the fight for his Disney+ solo series. The trailer addresses that question, revealing Kate Bishop's Ronin cosplay as the cause. Clint believes his murky past has come to haunt him ("when I wore the suit, I made a whole lot of enemies"), and sends his kids somewhere safe. The archer stays behind to investigate his mysterious impersonator and her motive for taking on New York's criminals alone.
Hawkeye Is Wearing Hearing Aids
Deafness has intermittently been part of Hawkeye's character in the Marvel comic books, first in the 1980s then again in the 2010s, but this trait hasn't translated into live-action - until now. The addition of hearing aids to Jeremy Renner's Disney+ costume was confirmed previously, and this shot clearly shows Barton's new apparatus. Marvel is making definite attempts to diversify its hero roster, and introducing Hawkeye's deafness is just the latest example.
Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop In Action
As Barton goes hunting for his shadowy impersonator, the Hawkeye trailer offers a better view of Hailee Steinfeld in action as Kate Bishop. Clad in her Ronin gear, Bishop gets cornered in a New York street and looks to be outnumbered by thugs. Fortunately, the young archer is already a capable fighter, flipping goons and holding her own against larger opponents. Steinfeld's action won't be limited to just shooting arrows in Hawkeye.
"You're Hawkeye!"
It's always interesting whenever MCU releases explore how the wider fictional world view the Avengers. We know everyone swoons over Thor, worships Tony Stark and hates Spider-Man, while Falcon & The Winter Soldier offered a forensic exploration of Steve Rogers' legacy. Kate Bishop's reaction when meeting Clint Barton proves that even Hawkeye has superfans. Not only does she recognize him immediately, but Kate's excitement proves she's a true Barton-ite. Jeremy Renner has described how his character doesn't understand Kate's iration, and this scene sets that dynamic up nicely. Kate Bishop being a Hawkeye fan and picking up Ronin's slack implies she somehow figured out Barton was the man behind both.
Kate Bishop's Archery Skills
The Hawkeye trailer's first demonstration of Kate Bishop's skill with a bow and arrow sees her fire a tennis ball at a bell rope, landing a perfect shot. Evidently, she's no beginner, and in the Marvel comics, Bishop learned archery after Hawkeye (and the other Avengers) saved her from El Matador. Maybe MCU Kate was one of the kids Hawkeye saved from that bus during Hawkeye imbues his arrows with state of the art technology and explosives, Bishop is forced to use materials from her local sports stores. Unfortunately, her game isn't quite perfect - Kate's shot ends up destroying the bell tower.
Kate Is "The World's Greatest Archer"
Kate Bishop proclaiming herself the world's greatest archer in Hawkeye's presence is like telling Thor you have the world's most luscious hair, but Kate does it anyway. Their exchange is a perfect introduction to the humor Hailee Steinfeld will bring to the MCU - the confidence to tell Hawkeye "some people" say she's the world's best archer, and the self-awareness to it she's actually one of those people.
