Caution: spoilers ahead for Hawkeye episode 4

As Clint's Christmas countdown continues, Marvel and MCU Easter eggs. Despite the festive theme, Hawkeye takes Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton and Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop into surprisingly un-Christmassy territory. Whether it's Barton's grief over Natasha, or Bishop getting the cold shoulder from her Avengers idol, Hawkeye's Yuletide cheer doesn't quite obscure the gravity of superhero life. Fortunately, there are enough MCU Easter eggs under Hawkeye's tree to balance out episode 4's more reflective moments.

Escaping a brush with Kate Bishop's mother and stepfather (and seemingly confirming Clint doesn't have history with Jack Duquesne in the MCU), the archery pals bond over a movie marathon, pizza, and how to kill someone with pocket change. The situation takes a turn when Hawkeye discovers the location of episode 1's stolen Avengers Compound watch, and sets out to retrieve it with Kate as his (overly) willing assistant. The mission turns sideways after Echo and Yelena Belova show up - the former hunting Ronin and the latter Black Widow. Suffering flashbacks to Vormir, Hawkeye instructs his new sidekick to go home.

Thankfully, episode 4's emotional roller coaster makes Easter eggs stops along the way. There are direct lifts from the Marvel comics, allusions toward Hawkeye's unseen MCU past, and subtle clues pointing toward the ghost of Christmas twists yet to come.

Jack's Hawkeye Mistake Nods To Clint's Comic Variants

Black Archer in Marvel comics

Face to face with an Avenger in his apartment, Jack Duquesne struggles to recall Clint Barton's superhero name, stuttering, "You're... you're Archer," before Barton corrects him. Referring to Hawkeye as "Archer" potentially nods toward two alternate versions of the Marvel hero. The real name of Earth-9602's Judgement League Avenger Hawkeye was Clinton Archer, while Earth-712 had Wyatt McDonald, who went by the names Golden Archer and Black Archer, as well as using the Hawkeye moniker.

Jack's Mug References Tony Dalton's Better Call Saul Character

Tony Dalton as Jack Duquesne in Hawkeye

Sitting down for a family chat, Jack Duquesne, Clint Barton, Eleanor Bishop and Kate all drink from mugs decorated with green hexagons and bees. Both are visual hallmarks of the Better Call Saul.

Hawkeye Doesn't Tell Eleanor He's A Father

Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton and Vera Farmiga as Eleanor Bishop in Hawkeye

Imploring Hawkeye not to endanger her daughter, Eleanor Bishop asks whether the Avenger is a parent himself - only to be met with a poker face. This small detail pulls from Avengers: Age of Ultron, which revealed the Barton family was in super-secret hiding, known only to a few within SHIELD. Clint has obviously loosened the reins a little since then - appearing publicly with his kids at "Rogers: The Musical" and in a New York restaurant - but still maintains an air of secrecy when untrustworthy strangers being prying.

Hawkeye's Madame Masque Artwork Hints

Hawkeye Madame masque art

Speaking of Eleanor Bishop as an untrustworthy stranger, many Hawkeye viewers suspect Kate's mother is actually Madame Masque from the Marvel comics, or at least knows her. Playing into that theory, several pieces of artwork hanging in the background of episode 4 show a blank-faced woman, somewhat similar to Madame Masque's traditional appearance. The first hint can be seen in the Bishop penthouse apartment after Hawkeye leaves, and there's a second drawing on the lower right wall in Echo's home.

Does Jack's Forrest Gump Easter Egg Prove His Innocence?

Forrest Gump sitting on a bench

Jack Duquesne has an endearing habit of butchering idioms, and misquotes Forrest Gump by saying, "Life is short... you never know what you're gonna get." Though hardly an obvious comparison, Jack and Forrest have something in common. Both are outwardly innocent, but often find themselves in the wrong (or right) place by coincidence, with Duquesne turning up at the black market auction, on Sloan Ltd's records, and having butterscotch candy from Armand's apartment immediately after the socialite's death. Is this a sign that, just like Forrest, Jack is merely a victim of circumstance?

"Big Guy" Could Be Another Kingpin Reference

Clint Barton on the phone in Hawkeye

Hawkeye episode 3 set up Kingpin's MCU debut with a series of references to Wilson Fisk, including the most suspicious suit sleeve in MCU history. Episode 4 drops another tease when Clint Barton claims Jack Duquesne is money laundering for "the big guy." The nickname could be interpreted literally due to Kingpin's traditional appearance in the Marvel comics.

Moira Brandon's Movie Poster Is A Marvel Comic Homage

Moira Brandon

Hawkeye previously established Kate Bishop's aunt as minor Marvel comic character Moira Brandon, thanks to the movie posters dotted around her apartment. Paying tribute to the original Moira more directly, the "A Chance Of Love" poster Kate draws on (the definitely-not-dry-wipe one) shows Moira adopting a pose lifted directly from the comic books.

Hawkeye's "Thanos Was Right" Mug

Thanos in Avengers Infinity War and Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton with Thanos Is Right mug in Hawkeye

Hawkeye's premiere played into the real life "Thanos Was Right" argument by having the slogan scrawled upon a bathroom urinal. Episode 4 revisits the gag, with Clint drinking from a "Thanos Was Right" coffee mug. Evidently, Kate Bishop's aunt is mad about the Mad Titan.

Hawkeye Isn't The Avengers' Man With A Plan

Hawkeye-Black-Widow-Story-Origins

When Kate Bishop expects her mentor to devise an ingenious plan, Hawkeye responds with, "Planning's not really my thing." This is a nod to how Clint Barton was rarely the brains of the operation in his MCU movies. When a scientific solution is called for, Hulk and Iron Man took point, while Captain America came up with any and all battlefield strategies. Before that, Hawkeye took orders from Nick Fury so, no, planning really isn't Clint's thing.

Trick Arrows Are Running Real Low After Tony Stark's Death

Hawkeye-Pym-Arrow-Ant-Man

Following episode 3's car chase sequence, Hawkeye left the MCU faithful wondering where Clint Barton's trick arrows were coming from. He's retired from SHIELD, and Hank Pym doesn't quite line up as Hawkeye's permanent supplier, so unless Tony Stark is making weapons from beyond the grave, trick arrows should be in short supply. To Kate Bishop's utter dismay, Hawkeye episode 4 confirms as much. A few arrowheads aside, Jeremy Renner's quiver is all but depleted of trick arrows, revealing another consequence of Tony Stark's tragic demise.
