The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya just had a massive Kickstarter, giving major hope for a long-awaited revival. Haruhi Suzumiya was one of the most popular anime of the 2000s, if not the most popular, yet to the disappointment of many, the series ended in 2010 after its theatrical film, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, despite there still being plenty of light novels for the anime to adapt.

Fans of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya have wanted an anime revival for over a decade, and there’s more hope for one than ever. A Kickstarter was recently launched for the anime to produce both a new music video and a voice drama with the original voice cast, and reportedly, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya’s Kickstarter greatly sured both of its goals in a single day, despite having until January. That proves that The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is as popular as ever, and even after over a decade, there’s plenty of merit in bringing it back for more.

With how massively successful Haruhi Suzumiya’s Kickstarter was, there’s more than enough merit in a potential third season. With it being almost 15 years since The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya was released, people had thought that too much time had ed to justify a third season, as anyone who was a fan when the series was still relevant would have long since moved on to other things. However, the massive success of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya’s Kickstarter proves that the anime is still relevant after so many years, and because of that, a third season is more than justified.

The ongoing status of the light novels also plays into that idea. Even after over 20 years, Nagaru Tanigawa still releases new light novels on occasion, with a new book, The Theater of Haruhi Suzumiya, set to be released worldwide in late November 2024. The Haruhi Suzumiya light novels are still releasing new content after 20 years, proving that the franchise is still popular. When combined with the success of Kickstarter, there’s still plenty of hope for a potential third season of the anime.

Why The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya Has Been Off The Air For Over A Decade

There are plenty of reasons why The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya deserves a revival, and that begs the question of why it’s been off the air for so long, to begin with. After Haruhi ended, many of the staff involved moved on to other Kyoto Animation anime projects, and one of the original production directors, Yutaka Yamamoto, was outright fired due to controversy over his work on Lucky Star. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya ended at least partially because no one was available to work on it, and as disappointing as that is, it does make a lot of sense.

Staff resources were a major reason behind Haruhi Suzumiya going off the air, but that might not be an issue anymore. Production at Kyoto Animation is notably slower than it was when Haruhi Suzumiya was at its peak of popularity, with them only putting out one anime a year at best, so Kyoto Animation’s current production schedules might create room for a potential third season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. All of that, of course, is hypothetical, but between that and the success of the Kickstarter, the future of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has never been more promising.
