Harry Potter's Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is well known for its four houses and how they divide. While each house is greater than just a collection of a few adjectives, it must be said there are generalizations that can be made about each one as well. This begs the question, of all the houses which one is the worst?
Gryffindor house might pride itself on loyalty and bravery, as well as being the house of the protagonists of Harry Potter, but is it actually that great? Could it, in fact, be the worst. Here are some reasons why that's the case.
Too Loud
Face it, Gryffindors live to be the center of attention, and whether it's a Quidditch Game, a test, or just breakfast, they always have to make a lot of noise. It's one thing to be brave, but there's never a moment of peace in the Gryffindor common room. Someone is always pranking someone else, or bragging loudly about their achievements, or pulling out some kind of magical mayhem treat that makes one roar like a lion.
There's just no way it's enjoyable to be a Gryffindor.
Too Selfish
Gryffindors are supposed to be loyal, but honestly, they look after themselves first. Even on supposedly honorable tasks, the Gryffindor always puts himself before everyone else. Harry claims to be noble tasks again and again, but he thinks his way is the right way and never listens to anyone else.
If he actually cared about those around him, he'd spend more time taking their advice and less time focused on himself. Gryffindors universally also have a hard time thinking about the struggles someone else might be going through. If they are in pain, it's the only pain that counts.
Too Spoiled
Gryffindors are absolutely the most coddled house. While Snape might favor Slytherins, he is the only one, and basically everyone else gives Gryffindors a . More than once they get rewarded where other houses would get punished, or they get rewarded just for the sake of it, or they get rewarded for things they absolutely do not deserve.
This kind of playing favorites makes Gryffindor house absolutely intolerable.
Harry Potter Went There
Being in Gryffindor house while Harry was there was absolutely the worst experience. Not only did he hog all the attention, but he attracted danger after danger. It was no easy business being a Gryffindor while Harry was in town, that's for sure.
But even after Harry graduated, it's no doubt even the faint presence he left behind was enough to attract trouble for generations. Not a good look for Gryffindor house.
Short-Sighted In Their Own Way
Gryffindors might sneer at Slytherins for being narrow-minded, but in truth, many Gryffindors are plagued with attitudinal issues of their own, they're just not made to examine them. Ron, for instance, while defending muggles and muggle-borns, refuses to allow that House Elves need to be granted greater equality.
Gryffindors are also quick to judge anyone from Slytherin house, treating every single person as though they have already declared themselves an enemy. This kind of attitude is exactly what breeds future enemies and Gryffindor house is incredibly guilty of it.
Too Arrogant
There isn't a Gryffindor alive who doesn't believe themselves to be the very best human being who has gone to the very best school (and was sorted into the very best house). Again and again, Gryffindors display an incredible pompousness and overall air of superiority which makes them unbearable.
It's no wonder most of the school tends to root against them.
Get Away With Rule Breaking
Supposedly, rule breaking is not tolerated at Hogwarts, but it certainly is if you're a Gryffindor. Even if one is punished in the short term, eventually they will likely be rewarded. Harry and his friends break rules, curfews, and restrictions hundreds of times, but Professors, and, of course, Dumbledore, turn a blind eye to it.
The fact that Gryffindors are never made to have any kind of consequences makes them the worst.
Too Angry
Though Gryffindors like to pretend they're saints, all that bravado, boldness, and arrogance has to go somewhere, and that place is likely anger. There seem to be a lot of disagreements in Gryffindor house, and a lot of brash outbursts from its .
Living in this house must feel like everything is permanently on a high boil.
They Endanger Others
Gryffindors think they see the greater good, but often, they lead those around them into greater trouble.
Over and over again, Harry's missions lead his classmates and friends into great danger. Gryffindors also don't see any issue with pranks that go too far and bullish behavior which leads to great upset.
They Have Bullies Of Their Own (But Pretend To Be Perfect)
While Slytherins are painted as bullies, there's a fair few living in the lion house as well. Fred and George Weasley, while largely seen as heroes, see no trouble with pranking their fellow students for their own amusement. Percy Weasley is an incredible bully, intimidating those around him and pompously striding about.
Neville Longbottom is certainly bullied by those in Slytherin house, but he's just as likely to be facing orders and intimidations from his fellow Gryffindors. It's not all sunshine and roses, even though Gryffindors would like you to think it is.
