Harley Quinn season 5's finale served as a great way to put the characters on a new path, but also could serve as a series finale if the show does not come back for season 6.
Harley Quinn is a show that has survived a streaming service change, going from DC Universe to HBO Max (now Max). Now, the series needs to survive a regime change. Ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the new co-CEOs of DC Studios, there has been a sense of uncertainty when it comes to projects that are not set in the continuity of the DCU's planned movies and TV shows. While Elseworlds projects will exist, a long-running series like Harley Quinn, which uses a large number of famous DC characters, could not be part of their plans.

The Plan Is For The DC Series To Come Back For More
Showrunner Dean Lorey teased his plans for Harley Quinn season 6 in March. The DC series' season 5 ended in a way that had many fans questioning whether it would be the end of the road for the show, which Lorey made sure to address. According to him, the crew behind the series was aware that the Harley Quinn season 5 finale could serve as a fitting ending for the series if it were to be canceled. After all, with the landscape of streaming these days, plans are always shifting, so preparing for the worst is a smart practice.
Lorey and the team that brings the DC series to life seem to have landed at a concept they are excited about for season 6, which he claims is "a pretty wonderful idea."
However, Lorey very much hopes that Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy's story does not come to an end with the season 5 finale. In fact, they are already having conversations about what could happen in a potential season 6. Lorey hopes that they will "have some exciting news soon" to share with the fans. The showrunner of the TV-MA animated series revealed that Harley Quinn has never had a plan for how long it could go on, though he hopes to stop a season before the show loses its footing and is not as good as it once was.

Harley Quinn Season 5 Review: DC's Most Interesting Series Cleverly Reinvents Itself & Makes A Case For Its Continued Existence
Harley Quinn season 5 makes the most of its new setting with major DC characters and a thrilling story leading to one of the show's best seasons.
Lorey is excited to continue exploring this pocket of the DC universe, and while he did not share what season 6's story would entail, the showrunner knows how Harley and Ivy's relationship would factor into it. According to Lorey, the plan is to have Harley and Ivy always endure whatever is thrown at them as a team, sticking together no matter how rough the landing might be. That said, Lorey and the team that brings the DC series to life seem to have landed at a concept they are excited about for season 6, which he claims is "a pretty wonderful idea."
Harley Quinn Season 6 Is Not Confirmed
The DC Series' Fate Still Hangs In The Balance
As confirmed by one of its showrunners, it has yet to be decided whether Harley Quinn will come back for season 6 or not. Aside from Lorey's comments about having plans for the potential season 6, no official word has come from the studio. Speaking with ScreenRant, Lorey previously commented on how a mystery Harley Quinn spinoff series was still moving forward, though "slower than you want them to move." If DC is contemplating adding new spinoffs to the Harley Quinn universe, then it would not make sense to cancel the flagship series.
After the show premiered in October 2019, it was revealed in February 2020 that Harley Quinn season 2 had been produced and would drop that April. Season 3 was announced only three months after the second season finished airing. Harley Quinn season 3 released its final episode on September 15, 2022. Season 4 was announced to be in the works that August, before the third season had even finished airing. Finally, season 5 was revealed to be happening on November 16, 2023, only two months after season 4 ended. This shows there is a clear pattern for the series' renewals.
Kite Man: Hell Yeah! stands as the only Harley Quinn spinoff for now.
The Harley Quinn season 5 finale aired on March 20, 2025. The longest a new season of Harley Quinn has gone before being announced is three months from when the previous season of the DC series aired its last episode. As such, if Gunn and Safran decide to keep the show around, Harley Quinn season 6 has a good chance of being announced by June 2025. Since Lorey is already working directly with Gunn, having served as the showrunner of Creature Commandos, the DCU's first release, it seems like Harley Quinn's chances of returning are positive.

The DC Series Has A Core Cast Who Needs To Return
Harley Quinn season 5 ended on a positive note, with the heroes back in Gotham City with their closest friends. If the show were to come back for season 6, that means that many of the characters in that final season would have to return. As Lorey said, the DC series will always focus on Harley and Poison Ivy, so the show's main duo would have to be back for any new seasons. Harley's recurring players would also need to be present, which include King Shark and his sons, Clayface, Bane and his family, Batman, the Bat-Family, and the Joker.

Since Gotham City and Metropolis are now so close together due to Superman pushing them to be, that opens the door for new appearances from the Man of Steel, who was absent for most of season 5, and Lois Lane, who developed a friendship with Harley. Lex Luthor and his sister, Lena, were last seen inside Frankette's digestive system, so all three characters should return. Sharon, Harley's now single mom, is another recurring player who is likely to return, being part of her daughter's life. Despite being dead, Frank could also come back to meet Ivy occasionally in the Green.

A Return To Familiar Grounds For The Irreverent DC Series
Season 5 took the series to Metropolis, where Harley, Ivy, and many of the show's recurring players had to deal with Brainiac and Lena Luthor's nefarious plans for the city. While the change in scenery was refreshing and made sense thematically as Harley and Ivy were trying to force their relationship not to go stale, season 6 of the show would likely take place in Gotham again. At the end of season 5, Harley and Ivy leave their friends in their apartment to jump into the city, signaling new adventures on their old grounds.
Harley has tried many different things in her life. She has been part of a crime duo with the Joker, led her team as a villain, ed Batman in defending Gotham as part of the Bat-Family, and took her hero role to Metropolis to save the city while Superman was absent. Speaking with The Direct, Harley Quinn showrunner Dean Lorey revealed that the planned story for season 6, should the series be renewed, will be "very different, and (...) unexpected." Based on his tease, it sounds like a major threat could throw Gotham upside down in Harley Quinn season 6.
