When it comes to comic book origin stories, Harley Quinn has one of the most infamous. Harley used to be a psychologist by the name of Dr. Harleen Quinzel that worked at Arkham Asylum. After several one-on-one meetings with the Joker, Quinzel fell for the Clown Prince of Crime and decided to throw away her life to be the criminal's partner-in-crime. However, after years of taking the Joker's abuse, Harley left him behind to pursue her own path, a decision that's seen her mostly leave her criminal leanings behind to become a full-blown hero.

It's been years since Harley Quinn and the Joker have been an item. However, her origin is so intrinsically tied to the Harlequin of Hate, it's hard to talk about Harley without mentioning the Joker at some point. But Harley has grown far beyond the Joker. She's teamed up with numerous heroes and has even been selected as a member of the Justice League. Unfortunately, all the achievements of the last few years don't change her past. But by becoming a new Batman, Harley has a chance (however brief) at exploring what her origin truly means to her.

Harley Quinn is Erasing the Joker From Her Origin

Harley Quinn might be biting off a bit more than she can chew by swapping out her origin for Batman's. After all, his beginning isn't much less traumatic than Harley's. However, it allows Harrley to reexamine how her past has helped shape her into the person she is today. People are the sum of their experiences and for better or worse, Harley overcame what the Joker put her through to become a more well-rounded individual. Harley's foray as the Dark Knight very likely isn't going to be permanent, but it will help her gain a better perspective on her origin story. Fans can see the new Batman appear in Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder #2, on sale August 15th.
