  • Producers are shopping the show around, hoping to find it a new home.

Halo season 3 came in the wake of the second season's run between February and March 2024.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount+ has cancelled Halo after season 2. The companies behind the show, namely Amblin, XBox and 343 Industries, are on the hunt for a new home for a possible season 3. Although the official reason for the cancellation has not been revealed, Paramount+ said in a statement that "we are extremely proud of this ambitious series." They also praised the show's cast and crew, wishing them the best in the future. Read the streamer's full statement below:

We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.

Could Halo Find A New Home?

The Paramount+ Show's Viewership Is Unclear

It remains to be seen if the show will be able to find a new home. Producers will have to work quickly if they hope to reassemble the Halo cast in a timely manner without them taking on other projects in the meantime. It is unclear if renewal will be a strong possibility, as the show's viewership is largely unknown due to the opacity of streaming numbers. However, while its commercial prospects are unclear, its critical reception was improving, which could be a strong incentive for it to be picked up. Halo reviews notwithstanding, the show also finds itself in a marketplace where projects adapted from video games are achieving both critical and commercial success, which could improve its prospects. In cinemas, The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed over a billion dollars and became one of the Top 5 highest-grossing animated movies of all time. The small screen has been faring nearly as well, with HBO's The Last Of Us earning one of HBO's largest debuts ever and Prime Video's Fallout being nominated for 17 Emmys ahead of their 76th ceremony.

However, the success of these other shows may be the very reason that Halo does not get picked up. While the show is part of a strong IP and could potentially be resurrected with the right publicity campaign, other streamers and networks that have the budget capacity to take on the sci-fi show may want to avoid season 3 competing with their own video game-derived shows. Prime Video, for instance, is also in development on a Tomb Raider project, and may see the Paramount+ show as a needless risk, especially considering they likely wouldn't fully own the first two seasons.
