Spoilers are ahead for Halo season 2's finale.

Summary

  • Master Chief and Cortana finally make landfall on the Halo, leading to a fascinating observation about the ring world's nature.
  • The Halo is a fusion of AI and organic life, reflecting the relationship dynamics between Master Chief and Cortana.
  • Master Chief struggles with his identity throughout season 2, ultimately learning to have faith in himself and make his own decisions — with Cortana's instead of her control.

In the Halo season 1's ending, Cortana assumes control of Master Chief, turning him into the perfect warrior, just as Natascha McElhone's Dr. Catherine Halsey had planned for her Spartans. Between seasons, John's neural implant containing Cortana is forcibly removed from the Spartan.

The sophomore outing begins with John feeling shaken by the loss of Cortana. In general, the Spartan has something of an identity crisis throughout season 2, questioning whether he's more weapon than human. In episode 6, Cortana transmits herself from Makee (Charlie Murphy) and Arbiter Var 'Gatanai's (Viktor Åkerblom) ship to the UNSC/ONI installation on Onyx, allowing Halo season 2 finale's ending.

Cortana Tells Master Chief The Halo Is A Perfect Fusion Of Nature & AI

Master Chief Observes That The Ring World Is "Alive"

Even though he's tasked with reaching the Halo ring before Makee and the Arbiter, Master Chief deserts his primary objective to save Kai (Kate Kennedy) and some of the Javelin Team Spartan-IIIs. When Makee abandons her damaged ship, she ensures that Cortana will go down with it by crushing the portable device that holds the AI. Luckily, Cortana flees into the wayward ship's systems, prompting John to continue his selfless streak and rescue Cortana. John pummels the ship's command center, seemingly fusing Cortana with his armor in a way that feels reminiscent of the duo's video game dynamic.

While Jen Taylor continues to voice Cortana in Halo season 2, Christina Bennington provides the physical performance for the character.

After crash-landing on the ring world, John realizes the surface of the Halo is alive; plants sprout and spring to life around him, despite the smoldering wreckage. When he shares his observations with Cortana, the AI tells him that the ring world is, "the perfect fusion of artificial intelligence and organic life." Given what the Halo ring does, it's not surprising that the Forerunner superweapon was designed to blend mechanics and nature. A living network, the Halo is much more than a galaxy-sterilizing device, but an incredible and inspiring example of Forerunner technology.

Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber) looks at the Forerunner structure on the Halo in the Halo season 2 finale

Abducted as a child, John-117 was molded into the perfect soldier by Dr. Halsey's (often unethical) Spartan-II program. After spending time with Cortana in season 1, Master Chief got a taste of what it was like to be a calculating, exact, and unstoppable warrior — one free from human error. When he loses Cortana, John struggles to know himself. Like the other Silver Team Spartans, he grapples with whether he's a weapon or a human first. All that wrestling culminates in John learning to have faith in himself — and to make his own way, regardless of orders.

Halo Season 3 Will Finally Begin The Story Of Combat Evolved

In the wake of an action-packed Halo season 2 finale, it seems Halo season 3 will finally begin the story of Halo: Combat Evolved, just as fans hoped.

While Dr. Halsey intended to erase John's humanity with the Cortana implant, Master Chief's video game counterpart excels because he works with the AI. Cortana's line about the living network of the Halo ring world being the perfect blend of the organic and the artificial holds a kind of double meaning. Not only is the Halo a remarkable fusion of those aspects, but Master Chief and Cortana's partnership is too. The duo is primed to be Halo season 3's most crucial relationship, especially as Master Chief travels deeper into the Forerunner structure on the ring world.
