In Hades, a new god is born in the form of Zagreus, and along the way, he receives assistance in the form of boons from gods and goddesses in Greek mythology. In the game, some of these boons, and some of these characters, seem more powerful than others. And, while some of the gods and goddesses have their own unique powers, not all of them are focused on fighting or warfare.

The main characters from the game, based on their design, their boons, and their position in Greek mythology give them varying levels of power. As such, some would be more likely to beat the others in a fight.

Persephone

Hades and Persephone from Hades game

Persephone is a goddess in mythology who isn't known for battle or fighting. Instead, she represents growth in many ways both literal and figurative. As such, there's nothing about her in the game that relates to fighting ability.

She might be a key player in the plot and provide wisdom and calm to the chaos of the underworld, but she would much rather grow a garden than fight a war.

Dionysus

Hades Greek God Dionysus from Hades game.

Dionysus might be a particularly fun god to interact with, but he’s not a fighter. He’s a partier and a lover, and as the God of Wine, he can be charismatic and a little unpredictable.

However, his boons aren’t particularly strong, and he himself isn’t going to rush into battle. He’d much rather stay behind and sip his drink while at a party surrounded by excitement.

Hermes

The god Hermes running in the game Hades.

Hermes is a messenger god, and he’s quick as can be. His boons provide swiftness and customization to Zagreus, and this does come in useful in a fighting situation.

However, Hermes himself isn't known for being a warrior type. He can be hard to catch and evade, but there are characters in the mythology that are specifically known for war and strategy, and he’s not one of them.

Aphrodite

Aphrodite in Hades game standing in front of pink background.

Aphrodite is the Goddess of Love, and she’s beautiful and charming. While Aphrotidte’s Aid is one of the call abilities that really come in handy against bosses, her weak effects aren’t as good as others such as doom.

And, while Aphrodite is powerful in many ways, fighting isn’t her main area of expertise or what she’s known for. However, she isn’t exactly weak, either.

Thanatos

Thanatos from the game Hades talking to Zagreus

Thanatos isn’t exactly a god, but he is the personification of death. He can pack a hefty punch when he arrives to help Zagreus on the battlefield, but he’s more there to bring souls to the Underworld than to fight.

Of course, he is powerful in his ways, and he’s also rather terrifying but he’s not as much of a warrior. However, while he might not be the best fighter, he is one of the best people to build a relationship with from the game.

Megaera

Megaera using her whip in the Hades game

Meg is the first boss that Zagreus encounters, and she, along with her sisters, are scary fighters to come up against. Still, Zagreus is able to beat her multiple times, and she’s also not a god with the same level of power as many of the other characters on this list.

Despite that, her whip is a formidable weapon. And, while Zagreus might learn how to beat her, he is still intimidated by her.

Achilles

Achilels and Patroclus from the Hades game.

Achilles is the consummate warrior, and he acts as Zagreus’ trainer and mentor. However, while he is a warrior with a lot of experience, he’s not a god or goddess, like many of the other characters in the game. Because of this, Zagreus ends up surprising him in ability.

Achilles would probably not have been able to beat Hades as Zagreus can, and, at least in this story, he’s already dead. Because of this, it’s hard to give him a higher ranking.

Artemis

Artemis from Hades game stands in front of the gameplay.

Artemis is the Goddess Of the Hunt, and her design and overall life reflect this. She comes across as quick and cutting with her bow and arrow, but despite being one of the more compelling characters, she isn’t as strong as some of the others.

Her boons can provide a lot of critical damage, but much of this is left up to a big element of chance. However, she’s still got some useful abilities to share with Zagreus, and she is known in mythology for speed and precision.

Poseidon

Posiedon from Hades Game

Poseidon in Greek mythology is quite the elemental force to be reckoned with. As God of the Sea, he commands a deep well of strength. And, while he comes across as just as strong in his visual design, his boons aren’t quite as useful as some of the other power players.

While his boons are useful for getting treasure, sometimes the knock-away effects can be more of a hindrance than a help.

Zeus

Zeus from Hades game throwing lightning.

Zeus is the ruler of the gods, so he’s going to fare well in a fight with anyone. In the game, he comes across as a bit stereotypical and not as interesting as some of the others, but he does offer exciting lightning boons.

These boons are overall useful and powerful, but Zeus does feel less adaptable as a character compared to the other gods around him. However, he is stable and provides a good baseline for boons to Zagreus.
