Reaching the true ending of Hades 2 plot points. The original godlike roguelike can technically be played forever, but reaching certain milestones does bring an end to the story of Zagreus and his attempts to escape the Underworld. Now Hades 2 will see Zag's sister Melinoé journey down into the land of the dead to face her grandfather Chronos, effectively flipping the first game's script.

Due to its nature as an endlessly replayable roguelike, managing to unlock the true ending of Hades can take a massive commitment of time and effort. Reaching the game's first ending is fairly straightforward, requiring that players escape the Underworld and defeat the game's final boss a total of 10 times. This will let Zagreus convince his mother Persephone to return to the Underworld, reuniting his family and partially repairing his relationship with his father Hades. A second ending can also be unlocked when players build strong relationships with Zag's Olympian relatives by gifting them Nectar, which leads to a lavish dinner party that reunites the whole Greek pantheon.

The First Hades Ending Reunites Persephone & Hades

Persephone in the Underworld in Hades

While the exact story of Hades 2 remains a mystery, in hindsight the ending of the original Hades did hold some hints towards a possible sequel. The new Hades 2 protagonist Melinoë is present in myth but never mentioned in the original game, despite the game's strong focus on family, which suggests that she wasn't born yet during the game's events. Hades and Persephone spent many years apart following Zag's birth, but their reunion following the ending of Hades probably led to the birth of Melinoë. Greek mythology also tells of Macaria, a third child of Hades and Persephone, who could possibly appear in Hades 2 following the Underworld rulers' reunion.

Hades and Zeus shake hands in the true ending of Hades

The true ending of Hades, which sees the Chthonic and Olympian gods come together as one big family, might've also set up the plot of Hades 2. The sequel will follow Melinoë as she ventures down into the Underworld to battle her grandfather Chronos, with the full might of Olympus behind her in her mission. Hades 2 adds new Greek god allies like the God of Light Apollo, while also bringing back returning deities, and this aid is possible thanks to Zagreus reuniting Olympus and the Underworld. The true ending of Hades does suggest that this alliance could be short-lived, however, which may tease more family drama coming in the sequel.

While Hades 2 will follow a brand-new protagonist on an original mythic mission, the first game's ending certainly planted seeds for the franchise's future. Persephone and Hades reuniting as the rulers of the Underworld probably leads to Melinoë's birth, since the magical god was never mentioned in the first game. The newfound alliance of Olympus and the Underworld could also come into play when Melinoë needs help defeating Chronos and saving her father Hades. The Hades 2 reveal trailer gave away few details about the dungeon crawler's mythological plot, but the sequel will definitely be a direct follow-up to the first game's happy endings.
