With that out of the way, there is only one more chance to see the popular team in their own movie and that is when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters in 2023. With James Gunn g on with Warner Bros. and DC, this will mark the end of the road for his heroes, although they could still appear in other characters’ movies down the line. It may also be the last time for fans to hear Gunn’s great taste in music in the Marvel Universe.
Music permeates every element of the Guardians of the Galaxy series, from the songs that offer insight and emotion at key moments of the movie, to the songs that scored the trailers used to promote the movie. It’s important to that the original trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy was set to Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling”, and that trailer, along with the song, did so much to set the tone and expectations for audiences.
With the new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 fueling speculation with its mournful rendition of "In the Meantime" by Spacehog, fans of the Guardians are keen to see how this iteration of the team’s final adventure plays out. Audiences are eagerly awaiting what songs James Gunn will use to tell his third, and final, story in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special has hit Disney+ and offers fans of the Marvel cosmic heroes a funny and heartwarming tale of holiday cheer.
"Fly Like an Eagle" by Steve Miller Band
While they didn't leave a reason, Dairyman2049 mentioned the Steve Miller Band song "Fly Like an Eagle." This actually makes sense within the context of the movie and could be a great addition. The song fits perfectly into the timeline of Peter Quill's mixtape, hitting in 1976.
Miller, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer/songwriter, watched this song rocket up the charts to number two after its release. The song often plays after the "Space Intro," which once again ties in perfectly with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Playing this right before they fly into action could be a fan favorite moment.
"Vienna" by Billy Joel
Billy Joel was a popular artist for many of the Redditors when discussing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 song artists. According to Brave-Permit-7713, a perfect song would be "Vienna." While Redditors mentioned other Billy Joel songs, this one came out in 1977, and it fits into the timeframe of the previous movies' songs.
According to the Redditor, they felt the first part of the song could play during an opening scene battle and then the end of the song could pick up when the movie ends, with the team flying through the wreckage of the past.
"She's Gone" by Hall and Oates
A lot of Redditors also loved Hall and Oates. However, the big problem here is that they released many of the songs after Peter's mom could have added them to a mixtape for him. While one person mentioned "Maneater" when dealing with Gamora and Peter, it came out in the 80s.
That led to Kalse1229 mentioning "She's Gone," which fits even better for the relationship between Peter and Gamora. This was a 1973 song, a ballad that remains among the best songs the duo ever recorded. What is best about this pick is that it is on James Gunn's personal Spotify playlist.
"20th Century Boy" by T. Rex
Another song that James Gunn added to his personal Spotify playlist for Peter and Meredith was T. Rex's "20th Century Boy." According to Kalse1229, this would be a perfect song to add when introducing Adam Warlock to the movie.
Will Poulter plays Adam Warlock in the movie. For fans who don't read Guardians of the Galaxy comics, Adam Warlock is one of the most powerful cosmic beings in the universe. He was who beat Thanos in The Infinity Gauntlet comic book storyline and will likely play a big role in the future of the MCU. This song fits his character to a tee.
“Midnight Train To Georgia” by Gladys Knight & The Pips
The 1973 hit from Gladys Knight & The Pips has all the potential to fit a Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. Redditor ChocyMilk115 suggested this Grammy Award-winning song as a song he’d like to hear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and it’s easy to see why.
The 1973 song ranks 439 on the Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, becoming a signature hit for Knight. “Midnight Train To Georgia” has that Motown feel, characteristic of the late 1960s and 1970s. Songs like “I Want You Back”, by the Jackson 5, and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye, have already brought that Motown touch to the Guardians of the Galaxy series, and this track would fit the musical tastes of Peter Quill.
“Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears
The timeless and influential synth-pop song from Tears for Fears is an iconic quintessential 80s pop track that has all the checkmarks to slot into a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, according to Redditor SnooSquirrels9804. Released in 1985, the song’s lyrics are truly haunting and mysterious, with no clear explanation given as to what the true meaning of the song is. The song was covered in recent years by Lorde for the 2013 Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, in a version that leans more into the enigmatic nature of the song’s lyrics.
It’s easy to imagine this song slotting nicely into the world of the Guardians of the Galaxy, particularly with the arrival of the all-powerful Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) in the gang’s third outing.
“Cats In The Cradle” by Harry Chapin
This 1974 folk song from American singer Harry Chapin topped the US Billboard Top 100 upon its release and was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011. Redditor Shiddah_Mapantza thinks “Harry Chapin’s Cats in the Cradle would make a great addition”, and it’s clear to see why.
The song is in keeping with the vibe of music featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy films thus far. The song also has a similar lyrical story to “Father & Son” by Cat Stevens, which was featured in villain Ego. Maybe it wouldn’t fit with Peter’s story in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 but could be used strongly with another character.
“Midnight Blue” by Electric Light Orchestra
Appearing on the iconic Electric Light Orchestra album Discovery in 1979, “Midnight Blue” is a slower song than most ELO songs that fans may be familiar with. Gentler and more emotional than ELO songs like “Don’t Bring Me Down” and “Livin’ Thing”, Midnight Blue is a track that Redditor Extension-Attorney21 thinks would slot nicely into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
“Midnight Blue” would fit perfectly with the romantic dynamic between Peter and Gamora, particularly as Vol. 3 will have to reset their relationship due to the time-traveling exploits of Avengers: Endgame that has brought Gamora back into the main MCU timeline. With ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky" had already appeared during the iconic opening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and no artist appearing in multiple Guardians movies, it's unclear whether this melancholic track could appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
“Take It On The Run” by REO Speedwagon
The 1980 pop-rock song from REO Speedwagon’s ninth album Hi Infidelity is a true 80s classic rock song, full of guitar solos and a big vocal performance characteristic of power rock ballads from that period.
While the song is not as well-known as their most famous track “Keep on Loving You”, it definitely fits potential candidates for a Guardians of the Galaxy song, with Redditor Coocoollama64 listing this track as one of his four most desired songs to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
“Dancing In The Moonlight” by King Harvest
This seminal 1970 pop-rock track by King Harvest has stood the test of time since its initial release over 50 years ago, receiving covers by numerous different artists, most famously in 2000 by Toploader. But, it’s the original by King Harvest that has become popular among Redditors for anticipated songs to appear in Vol. 3.
A deleted Redditor commented, “I wanna hear dancing in the moon light by king harvest”. The upbeat nature of the song, coupled with its period-level appropriateness for Peter’s musical tastes, make it a perfect candidate for the Vol. 3 soundtrack.
“Every Time I Think Of You” by The Babys
Another big rock ballad from the late 1970s by The Babys, “Every Time I Think Of You”, much like “Midnight Blue”, could be used to tell the rekindling love story between Peter and Gamora.
With lyrics like “Cause people to say that our love affair will never last / But we know a love like ours will never ”, it’s easy to see why Redditors like GoldPurpleWildcat included it among songs they’d like to hear in Vol.3.
“Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” by Elton John & Kiki Dee
This song suggestion also comes from Redditor GoldPurpleWildcat, who suggests the karaoke classic “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” by Elton John and Kiki Dee. It is quite surprising that no Elton John songs have had their way into either of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies so far.
With the tracks from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 coming from the cassette tapes gifted to Peter from his mother, based on her favorite 70s/80s music, and Elton John being a revolutionary figure from that period, it’s odd that no Elton John song has appeared in either of the movies so far. This could all be rectified in Vol. 3 with the appearance of this classic 70s duet from Elton John and Kiki Dee.
