Marvel's the current Guardians of the Galaxy charged into battle against their classic comic predecessors from the team's very first appearance in 1969?
It's worth noting that the 2008 team in comics - the modern incarnation - has two that are absent from the 2014 film. Both Adam Warlock and Phyla-Vell ed Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon and Groot on their journeys through space. Both Phyla-Vell and Adam Warlock are arguably the most powerful of the modern team with a variety of unique abilities, which is most likely why they were left out of James Gunn's film adaptation altogether (though Adam Warlock is set to appear in 2023's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3).
The rest of the team is certain no slouch in the fighting department. In general, the comics team is overall stronger than their portrayal in the films. Star-Lord is far more competent in the comics, and his Element Gun (a signature weapon not seen in the films) can produce one of the four elements as projectiles. Rocket and Groot are largely the same as in the films, though they're better fighters. Gamora has an accelerated healing factor aside from being one of the most deadly combatants in the galaxy, and while Drax lost certain abilities - flight, for one - leading up to the 2008 series, he is no less deadly with a blade than his cinematic counterpart.
Unfortunately, the original Guardians have powers beyond the physical. Major Victory, the leader, is a psychokinetic that can launch psychic blasts with his mind. Martinex T'Naga is a genetically-engineered being who can fire bolts of infrared energy with one hand, microwave energy with the other, and is highly resistant to extreme temperatures. Charlie-27 is a pilot who was engineered to exist on a world with high gravity, and as such has super-strength and durability. Finally Yondu rounds out the team, possessing super-strength, super senses, and his custom yaka arrows (that he fires from a bow).
The modern Guardians are competent fighters but have very little intrinsic ability to use long-range attacks, whereas Major Victory and Martinex can hold off the team easily. However, if the 2008 team has Phyla-Vell - who can fly, shoot energy blasts from her hands and absorb energy in a similar manner to Captain Marvel - then the battle is ed. Add Adam Warlock to the mix and the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy will certainly gain the upper hand over the original team.
