James Gunn recently offered an update on his MCU installment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn's third installment in the franchise is set to premiere in May 2023 and sees Iwuji in a mysterious leading role.
There's a lot on Gunn's slate when it comes to his superhero projects, especially within the MCU. His Disney+ special, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, is currently in the works, and production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is well underway. After his DCEU directorial debut with which sees John Cena in the titular role alongside Jennifer Holland (Emilia Harcourt), Danielle Brooks (Leota Adebayo), Iwuji (Clemson Murn), and others.
While speaking with Collider, Gunn offered an update on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and hyped up Iwuji's role in the project. The director explained that people were "freaking out over how good" Iwuji was during shooting and teased that MCU fans might just be in for something unexpected when seeing the film. Gunn's full quote can be read below:
“It's going great. Chukwudi, who plays Murn in Peacemaker, is one of the main characters in the movie and people are freaking out over how good this guy is. Literally freaking out. I think that I'm really happy. I gave a bunch of scenes to Marvel right before Christmas break. Kevin [Feige] went... They were all really, really, really stoked. But also, it's not going to be the movie people... It's different than what people are going to expect. It's a hard road, but I'm really happy with it so far.”
With Gunn's recent comments in mind, it's certainly hard to predict Avengers: Endgame. Perhaps, Iwuji will bring the darker side of his Peacemaker character to the MCU and might serve as a sort of villain or foil character to the Guardians. Either way, Gunn made it pretty clear that he wanted Iwuji in this next Marvel project, having described Iwuji as "one of the best actors I've ever worked with" when his casting was announced in November.
For now, Iwuji's role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains a mystery, but with Gunn's direction and a well-written story, he's sure to have a memorable role. Since specific story details have yet to be released, fans can only speculate on what exactly Gunn meant when he teased a very "different" movie than anticipated. But regardless of what that surprise is and who exactly Iwuji will play in the film, it's sure to be an epic conclusion to Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.
