Grand Theft Auto 6 is easily one of the most anticipated games of all time, with players desperate for literally any information on the game or, preferably, a new trailer. Rockstar has a great track record for its games, with the likes of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 breaking all kinds of records and selling millions of copies each. Thanks to the hype surrounding it, fans are expecting GTA 6 to pull the same kind of numbers, if not even more.

It's clear why there is so much excitement and buzz for the game, even if Rockstar is telling fans to lower their expectations for GTA 6, and it feels like it's almost untouchable. It seems almost inevitable that, so long as Rockstar pulls it out of the bag, Grand Theft Auto 6 will sweep all the awards, critical acclaim, and players' cash when it launches. Well, that would be the case were it not for one plucky title that could nudge GTA 6 out of the way and take its throne.

Now that Grand Theft Auto 6 has an official release window of 2025, players can almost guarantee that it'll nab Game of the Year, as well as a plethora of other accolades. However, if Hollow Knight: Silksong, the long-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed indie hit Hollow Knight, also releases in 2025, then there's a good chance GTA 6 will have some steep competition. It is, after all, the most wishlisted game on Steam, beating Monster Hunter Wilds, S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Heart of Chernobyl, and Space Marine 2, all of which have confirmed release dates.

Hollow Knight: Silksong was originally meant to launch in early 2023. However, this release window was missed, and the game was pushed back to an unspecified release date. So far, fans still don't know when Hollow Knight: Silksong will come out.

Not only is Hollow Knight: Silksong the most wishlisted game, but it trends during every Nintendo Direct, with hundreds of fans spamming comments in the live chat about how there has to be a Silksong reveal. Despite some fans being tired of waiting for Hollow Knight: Silksong, there is still so much hype surrounding it, and it is extremely likely that when Silksong is finally released, it will be one of the best-selling games of that year. This obviously puts it in direct competition with GTA 6, especially when it comes to critical acclaim if it is released in 2025.

There is a very good chance that if Hollow Knight: Silksong releases in 2025, it will snatch the title of Game of the Year from GTA 6. After all, Rockstar's last game, Red Dead Redemption 2, lost out to God of War (2018) for the Game of the Year award at the Game Awards back in 2018. There's a good chance, especially if Silksong is as good as everyone hopes it will be, that it could finally nab a GOTY award and potentially steal it from GTA 6.

Notably, Hollow Knight also did not win Game of the Year at the Game Awards when it was released in 2017. The winner of GOTY in 2017 was Breath of the Wild, which is not particularly surprising. However, Hollow Knight was nominated for Best Debut Indie Game, although it lost to Cuphead.

Naturally, both of these games will do extremely well regardless of whether they launch in the same year. It seems almost impossible for GTA 6 not to sell at least several million copies, much like GTA 5, and Hollow Knight: Silksong, as highly anticipated as it is, can't get in the way of that. After all, both of these games have differing fanbases despite their immense popularity, and players also have the capacity to play at least two games a year.

If GTA 6 fails to rock the boat when it comes to innovation and delivers more of Rockstar's usual quality, then Hollow Knight: Silksong could come out on top as Game of the Year.
