NBC's hilarious half-hour comedy ranked as one of the top comedies currently on television, and it does not seem to be slowing down for season three.

The Good Place's initial premise was already strange for a comedy: all of the main characters who are human are dead and living in "the Good Place", a euphemism used to describe an unspecific heavenly afterlife. In the first season, The Good Place ended with a twist that turned the show on its head: the Good Place was actually the Bad Place all along. The second season's finale, in a similar fashion, upended the show and altering the underlying premise once again. In season three, Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason will be reuniting in the "real world" to complete a test that can earn them a spot in the real Good Place... but their memories have been erased, so they don't know each other or what's at stake.

You Can Expect The Main Cast To Return

The Good Place Kristen Bell Ted Danson

There have not been any casting confirmations for The Good Place's third season. However, given how the second season of The Good Place ended, the show would not work without its core cast: Kirsten Bell as Eleanor, William Jackson Harper as Chidi Anagonye, Jameela Jamil as Tahani Al-Jamil, Manny Jacinto as Jason Mendoza, D'Arcy Carden as the robotic Janet, and Ted Danson as Michael. Because season three will center on Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason's journey to the real Good Place together, any surprise disappearances would be difficult to explain. Likewise, Michael and Janet have been integral to the group's growth, and the show wouldn't be the same without them.

It seems likely that ing cast , including Maya Rudolph as Judge "Jen" Hydrogen and Maribeth Monroe as Mindy St. Claire, will also return.

We Don't Know About The Good Place's New Cast

The Good Place Series Premiere

Casting announcements for the third season have not been announced yet. Because show creator Mike Schur has worked on both Brooklyn Nine-NineThe Good Place could continue to feature crossover casting. Adam Scott (Ben from Parks and Rec) has previously guest starred as the demon Trevor, Marc Evan Jackson (Holt's husband Kevin in Brooklyn Nine-Nine) plays The Good Place's Judge Shawn, and Jason Mantzoukas (Fragrance designer Dennis Feinstein from Parks and Rec and Adam Pimento from Brooklyn Nine-Nine) has appeared as Derek, Janet's artificially-created rebound boyfriend.

The Good Place Story So Far

In the first season of The Good Place, Kirsten Bell's Eleanor found herself dead and in "The Good Place", an afterlife paradise overseen by the angel Michael. Eleanor believes that she has been sent to the Good Place by mistake, which she initially tries to hide before genuinely trying to change her ways. Eleanor's "soul mate" Chidi begins to give her lessons in moral philosophy to help her. She becomes friends with their neighbor Tahani and discovers that the Buddhist monk Jianyu is actually a dimwitted DJ named Jason. In the shocking first season finale, however, Eleanor realizes that she and her companions - Chidi, Tahani, and Jason - are actually in the Bad Place and Michael is a demon. The Good Place is just an elaborate ruse to make them torture and hate each other.

The show returned with a new energy in its second season, as Eleanor and friends repeatedly try to escape the Bad Place; Michael continues to erase their memories and manipulate the setting around them to perfect his secretly hellish design. However, Michael's demon colleagues become frustrated with his ineffective plans, and he turns to the humans for help. Chidi teaches moral philosophy to Eleanor, Tahani, Jason, and Michael in the hopes that they can all go to the real Good Place. They plead their case to Judge Hydrogen - or just "Jen" for short - but everyone but Eleanor fails their tests to go to the Good Place. The four agree that they will only go to the Good Place together, and Michael convinces Judge Jen to give them one more shot. Judge Jen's test will be the focus of season three.

The Good Place Season 3 Story Is A Mystery

For Judge Jen's test, the four humans will be returned to their lives before their deaths and they will have the opportunity to fix their mistakes on earth. It remains to be seen if Eleanor and her friends have been truly resurrected and returned to earth or if they are simply in a simulation. Meanwhile, Michael and Janet monitor the humans' progress in the hopes that they will be able to revise their ways.

In the second season finale, some of the specifics of Judge Jen's test are revealed and the audience follows Eleanor's new life. Eleanor is returned to moments before her death, except this time she is saved from being run over by shopping carts. At first, Eleanor seems to have learned from her lessons in the Good Place, but she reverts to her old ways and Michael intervenes, prompting Eleanor to seek out Chidi in Australia. The second season ends with Eleanor finding Chidi. Chidi's returned life on earth is largely unexplored, and Tahani's and Jason's new lives are currently unknown. Undoubtedly, season three will follow up with each of the main characters before exploring and re-establishing their relationships on Earth.

Whether Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason the test in season three, additional seasons could follow them to other places in the afterlife. It's difficult to speculate on the show's arch beyond the beginning of season three given that it's so prone to changing the rules. It's possible that season three and beyond could completely flip how audiences understand The Good Place.

The Good Place Season 3 Doesn't Have A Release Date

While there is not an official release date for The Good Place season three, it will likely premiere in September 2018. This would follow from the initial air dates of the first two seasons: season one aired September 16, 2017 and season two aired on September 20, 2018. NBC has ordered thirteen episodes, and if season three follows the same pattern as prior seasons, then the season will run from September through the first week of November before returning in January of 2019.
