The 2022 Golden Globe Awards have been canceled on NBC, with the network ing the rising tide of protest against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The move is one of many recent developments spelling potential doom for longstanding awards shows like the Academy Awards, which have generally been led by calls for greater diversity in the voting organizations. NBC’s announcement follows extensive efforts to boycott the show in the face of what many have called insufficient efforts to reform.
A show like the Golden Globes depends on Hollywood star power to succeed, but that star power has decided to boycott the event en masse for next year. A number of independent actors have criticized the HFPA’s drastic lack of diverse representation of late, including show hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Those stars have since been ed by major studios like Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia, all of whom have announced they intend to boycott the 2022 show.
Now, it looks like there may no longer be a show to boycott. Per Deadline, NBC has announced that the Golden Globes will not air on the network in 2022. “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC said in an official statement. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”
Negative sentiment against the HFPA has grown substantially in recent years due to the organization’s overwhelmingly white male hip. The Golden Globes have been on the receiving end of fierce criticism for a number of odd decisions, such as the nomination of the horror movie Get Out for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy in 2018. This year, the show was criticized for placing I May Destroy You.
At this point, the future of the Golden Globes is up in the air. Without NBC’s longstanding broadcast deal, and with viewership for awards shows in general dropping substantially, it’s questionable if the event will, or should, survive. And with fierce pressure mounting from Hollywood itself, it seems dubious if the Golden Globes will return to NBC after the 2022 hiatus.
