Fans of Dragon Ball Super are eager for the series to resume so that they can see Goku face off with Frieza's new form, but even once Frieza is again defeated, there will remain one more challenge for Goku and Vegeta. That challenge, of course, will be to defeat Beerus and Whis.
The Dragon Ball Super era kicked off with the arrival of Beerus and Whis, so it would only be appropriate for it to end the same way. After all, Goku didn't really "defeat" Beerus upon their first meeting; he only managed to tire the God of Destruction out a bit. More than that, Beerus and Whis have been training Goku and Vegeta for quite some time now, and the final test for any good student is to eventually defeat their own master. There is no stronger opponent for Goku to fight than Beerus, and proving his growth since the start of the series would be the ultimate way to end it.

The Divine Beings Must Be Defeated to Bring Super's Story to an End
Dragon Ball has always been about Goku learning and growing, suring each of his masters in turn. With Beerus and Whis as his seemingly final instructors, representing the power of gods and angels, there can be no greater test than conquering them in battle. Beerus and Whis have been training Goku and Vegeta in their own techniques, and have millennia of experience to augment their fighting prowess. Even for fast learners like these two, it will be an uphill battle conquering the ones who taught them.
Beerus is, of course, the most dangerous to fight. His destruction energy, also known as Hakai, can destroy even spirits upon , so one can't take the risk of allowing even one of his attacks to land. Worse still, they even have to be conscious about where missed attacks land, as they could unintentionally destroy an entire planet. Beerus is a master of the Ultra Ego technique which he taught to Vegeta, which allows him to grow stronger the more damage he takes in battle--and a god can certainly take a lot of punishment.
Whis has been their primary instructor, and is an effortless master at the Ultra Instinct state, something which angels are able to keep active at all times. This makes it incredibly difficult, if not outright impossible, to actually land a hit on Whis, which may actually be a big part of why angels are assigned to work with Destroyer Gods in the first place. Even Goku using his own Ultra Instinct still can't measure up to Whis's use of the technique. Perhaps, as Black Frieza pushes them to their limits, they'll find a new way to overcome not only Frieza, but a way to stand a chance against Beerus and Whis as well.
The Final Boss Will Push Goku and Vegeta to Their Limits
Defeating the Divine May Call for An Ascension
There are a lot of ways that a fight between Goku and Vegeta and Beerus and Whis could go down; perhaps it really is a test, and they'll need to demonstrate mastery of what they've learned. Maybe Beerus will decide that they need a motivating factor to ensure they're fighting their hardest, and he will actually threaten Earth once again. And of course, there's always the chance that it's another friendly sparring match, one that might finally give Goku and Vegeta the chance to get one up on their immortal teachers.
Fighting against Beerus and Whis could push Goku and Vegeta to new heights as well. As they've come to master the techniques of the angels (Ultra Instinct) and of Destroyers (Ultra Ego), they've also been training as replacements for Beerus and Whis. Perhaps the series will end with Beerus deciding the time to step down has arrived, and putting Goku and Vegeta through one final challenge: to prove that they're worthy of taking his place.
Ending Dragon Ball Super with a final fight against Beerus and Whis would be an excellent way to bookend the series, concluding in much the same way it started, but also demonstrating how much its characters have grown throughout the story. There are many ways this could be done, but the important thing will be Goku and Vegeta proving their strength. Whether it all ends friendly or adversarial, the ultimate challenge waiting at the end of Dragon Ball Super can be none other than their very own teachers.
