  • Godzilla X Kong proved that the Hollow Earth is the most interesting part of the Monsterverse, offering endless possibilities for Titan-centric stories.
  • The introduction of new Titans and classic Toho monsters in future Monsterverse movies can be seamlessly integrated into the mysterious and uncharted terrain of the Hollow Earth.

The action of the rebirth of Mothra and the discovery of a hidden Iwi tribe.

In the grand tradition of the Toho monster movies, Godzilla X Kong's ending still included a violent kaiju clash that leveled a major city (in this case, Rio de Janeiro). However, the latest entry in the Monsterverse proved that the surface world simply isn't as interesting as the mysterious environment that can only be accessed by portals. One major detail about the Hollow Earth was revealed in Godzilla X Kong that could provide some insight into the future direction of Monsterverse movie settings.

Godzilla x Kong Confirms The Monsterverse Has Barely Explored Hollow Earth

Only 5% Of Hollow Earth Has Been Mapped

One of the scenes featuring Dr. Ilene Andrews' Hollow Earth monitoring team includes a bit of dialogue that is only mentioned in ing: only 5% of the Hollow Earth is mapped. That means that a vast majority of the territory that Kong now dwells in remains undiscovered. The Monsterverse movies and the Apple TV+ tie-in show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters have shown several different parts of the Hollow Earth, including Kong's temple, the Subterranean Realm, and the time-warping Axis Mundi, but there is obviously a ton more to discover.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is now available for purchase on all major VOD platforms.

With portals all over the globe and Titans both active and dormant at different sites, there are plenty of ways for Monarch and less-principled parties (like Apex Cybernetics) to access the Hollow Earth in search of knowledge and resources. The ending of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 made it fairly clear that there may be entirely different worlds within the Hollow Earth, with different sets of physical rules and Titans. It's all but certain that the show's second season, and all future Monsterverse movies, will continue to explore the enigmatic biosphere and terrain.

Hollow Earth's Unmapped Sections Allow For More Monsterverse Surprises

The appearance of any Titan is possible with 95% undiscovered

With 95% of it still unseen, the Hollow Earth is essentially a blank canvas for the creators of Monsterverse content. The Axis Mundi seen in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters proved just how wildly different each area can be, and set up the possibility for further departures from the somewhat "normal" ecosystem of Kong's domain in Hollow Earth. As exciting as the notion of elements like time warping is, the fact that virtually any Titan has a path into the Monsterverse through the Hollow Earth is what really matters.

The Monsterverse has done a great job balancing new Titans like Shimo and Skar King with classic Toho monsters like Mothra and Rodan, and the undiscovered sections of Hollow Earth essentially mean that the introduction of both can come at any time. Hollow Earth can be shaped to fit existing Toho monster lore for kaiju like Megalon or King Caesar as easily as it can be used to introduce new Titans like the MUTOs. While it was little more than a throwaway line in Godzilla X Kong, the Hollow Earth reveal was a brilliant way to open the universe.

Hollow Earth Can Be The Main Location For Future Monsterverse Movies Now

Godzilla X Kong proved Titan-centric stories are better

The Skar King's ape army yelling at Kong in Godzilla x Kong

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire proved one thing above all others: the surface world simply isn't the most interesting part of the Monsterverse. The threat of Titans destroying humanity and the surface world will always loom large; audiences can identify with human characters and the real-world locations, and Godzilla's entire purpose is protecting the surface. However, the ending of Godzilla vs. Kong and the entirety of Godzilla X Kong include human outposts in Hollow Earth, meaning there can still be human involvement in Hollow Earth-focused narratives.

Godzilla X Kong also featured large swaths of time during which there was no human involvement. One of the Monsterverse's greatest triumphs has been the humanization of Kong; he has been transformed into an empathetic and heroic protagonist using no speech. The same can be said of Godzilla to a lesser degree, and the hopeful Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire sequel could make him an even more empathetic hero. Human characters no longer need to star in Monsterverse movies, nor should they. The real stars are the Titans, meaning Hollow Earth could be the primary setting for future movies.
