Details indicate that the MonsterVerse may finally be prepared to show the missing parts of the battle with the MUTOs from 2014's Godzilla. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the first installment in Legendary's MonsterVerse notably only showed a portion of the conflict between Godzilla and his two Titan foes. The only full fights it included were his final encounters with the male and female MUTOs.
The 2014 movie infamously did a cutaway when Godzilla made his grand entrance in the movie. It teased his collision with the MUTOs, only to switch scenes. Much to the frustration of audiences, the movie purposively hid the bulk of the action for most of the movie. Instead, it provided just glimpses of it through news footage on TV and by briefly showing the Titans fighting from the perspective of the human characters. Godzilla didn't focus on the battle until it was time for it to wrap up. Exactly what happened up until that point was largely left up to the imagination of the viewer.
Godzilla's Show May Include The Missing MUTO Fight
Given that the fight is now a part of the MonsterVerse's past, there wasn't an expectation for it to ever be revisited, but plans for Apple TV+'s untitled Godzilla show point to it becoming relevant again in the very near future. As the synopsis has confirmed, the series will explore the aftermath of the battle that ravaged San Francisco, meaning that the MUTO fight is essentially what sets the story in motion. Not only that, but set photos prove the show will be set at least partially in Oakland, which will boast a military presence. Its extreme proximity to San Francisco and the military being on hand hints at the series actually showing what happened in that area.
Even if it does a second look at a fight that already occurred, Godzilla's Apple TV+ show won't risk an unnecessary repeat of any major MonsterVerse moments. Due to how long the fight went on and how much of the fighting was glossed over, the potential exists for the series to deliver some exciting monster action. It's possible that what's covered in the show will highlight the power gap between Godzilla and the two MUTOs. Presumably in the interest of making Godzilla's killing move a shocking end to the fight, the movie avoiding revealing too early just how much Godzilla outclasses the two MUTOs. So in contrast to the film, the Apple TV+ series can show the struggle the MUTOs experienced trying to reign in Godzilla.
The Missing Fight May Be Important To Godzilla's Show
As for why Godzilla's show would circle back to something that happened over ten years ago in the MonsterVerse timeline, it's important to note that its human story hinges on characters impacted by what happened in San Francisco. Similar to how Godzilla: King of the Monsters harkened back to the fight to provide backstory for the Russells, the series may do the same with its protagonists in order to lay out their personal connection to Godzilla, the Titans, and Monarch.
